My dog licks everything, all the time. He is constantly licking himself, the floor, the couch, my clothes, blankets, you name it...he just licks and licks and it drives me crazy...what is this and what can I do? He is 2 if that helps, and a german sheperd/lab...do these breeds have this tendency or it is something else?

Dogs Have sent glands around they're anal area better known as Anal glands. If a dog sits on the couch the anal gland secretions can get on the material & dogs love to lick this up. Yummy ! This could be part of the trouble.Does he lick his hind quaters a lot ?

Yes it is normal for a dog to want to lick things and smell things and even chew thing. To get you dog to stop licking things go to a pet store and ask for some bitter spray. This spray smells and is really bitter and dogs will stay away from any thing that it is on because they hate the taste. So get that spray and spray it on anything and everything you don't want your dog to lick. That should put a end to the licking.

Some dogs just do that. My 5 yo pit does it all the time. I go to sit on the couch and can't because she has licked a giant wet spot on it. I give her a salt lick like for horses and that seems to help a lot. Maybe it will help your dog.

My pit bull used to do that all the time. lol. Go to a pet supply store and pick up a bottle of "Bitter Apple" and lightly mist it on everything. It won't stain your furniture, or create a bad smell. But the dogs hate the stuff.

You can get spray that taste bad to them and it will stop him from licking where ever you spray it. Also get him a Kong and fill it with treats or some kind of toy that has something you can stuff etc..

YOur dog is craving something. I would get him checked by your vet and ask them about supplements or perhaps changing your dog food.

where you do not want him to lick, apply something that he does not like to eat. maybe it's something more serious, ask a vet. good luck.

That's what dogs do...that's what seperates them from the more intelligent cat species.
