The Renaissance lasted from about 1300 to about 1600. It was interesting in that it saw an expansion of knowledge about nature, a greater awakening of secular power (beyond the church), and an emergence from a period of great oppression by ecclesiastical authorities. The resulting artistic freedom led to an explosion of sculpture, painting, literature and music. The increase in trade also led to a cross-pollination of the arts across international boundaries.

Lots of good stuff happened. Some excellent art, some wonderful music, and was the rise of humanism:
"dissemination of humanistic philosophies from the Greco-Roman era - Aristotle in particular, but also Plato (and so Socrates), Epicurus, Cicero, Seneca and others - created the intellectual climate which both fostered the emergence of Humanism, the interest in man and the here and now."
Oh, and let's not forget the scientific revolution: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_Revolution
