how bout go more with a classy approach, dont just put some crappy 3 dollar bottle of any rum in it, eggnog goes best with a dark rum, it has a more sensual taste to it, any dark brandy or whisky wiould do fine. im going to put covousieor (sp?) or hennessey (sp?) in mine this year.....also, sprinkle FRESH ground nutmed and cinnamon on top to make more presentable. you can also rim your glasses with some corn syrup, very lightly dip rim in syrup and then dip rim into cinnamon, or whatever xmas spice you like...very easy and quick and gets very appreciated.....can ya tell im a little of a cocktail partier?

apricot brandy is excellent in eggnog. even though I love rum and coke, I think the brandy is the right liquor for the eggnog I use one full shotglass of brandy to a glass of eggnog , if not strong enough add more brandy depending on the glass size

The one you like the most... :-)

We've tried brandy, bourbon, several varieties of rum and Jack Daniel's (which isn't *exactly* bourbon). I'm fond of Jack (in fact, I am a bona-fide Tennessee Squire), but I have to say that I like bourbon -- Rebel Yell is a popular choice -- best in egg nog. And it's also awesome with a dash of cinnamon schnapps in it; we've recently discovered Goldschlager as an "accent drink" for toddies, and I'll be getting some more to put in egg nog now that I think of it.

If you're planning a party, though, consider having some of each so that your guests can choose their tipple. I'd go with a light to medium rum (skipping my usual recommendation for Gosling's Black Seal, my favorite rich, full-flavored dark rum) to keep the color light and cheerful, as well as a decent bourbon such as Rebel Yell (save the really good stuff, the single-cask select bourbons, for sipping straight by the tree with your sweetie at your side), and a decent brandy as well.

Ooooh -- meld1707, we are DEFINITELY going to try rimming the glasses with cinnamon-sugar this year! Why have I never thought of that before??? It'd also be awesome to do with spiced cider, only for that I'd rub the rim with orange juice and add a nice orange liqueur as well as dark rum. Wow!

Traditionally, eggnog would contain whiskey, rum, brandy, or cognac. Of these four, just pick whichever you have around and enjoy the taste of.

My favorite is Amaretto Di Saronno or Kirschwasser Cherry Brandy.

Yum!

even though a lot of people said bourbon and yes some even went as far as brand, i feel that a ver-r-ry generous helping of "gentleman jack " is by far way more suburb (?) in taste. in fact , i have a cup of such sitting upon my desk asd i respond. to all a god nitre.

Many die hard aficionados claim that brandy is what should be used. I prefer cognac, if there is none then try some Baily's Irish Creme.
