Start reading to them now! MIne love to just sit and flip through books. They are 2 and 3, so they don't read. They also see me on the couch, not watching T.V. but reading, quietly or talking with my husband about something I have just read. The environ you create will have alot to do with their choices. If there are toys everywhere but the books are up high, they won't play with them or explore them. However if you put some more sturdy books on their level (toddlers love board books!) and let them just sit and scan, their brains will encounter so much!
We also take board books with us in the car and shopping. They will be so quiet just flipping through them and they fight over who gets a particular book. So, just make them available, and read to them at least once a day!

I'm forty four and began with Enid Blyton and Beatrix Potter, later, Roald Dahl, CS Lewis and the Black Cauldron trilogy. The Phantom Tollbooth via Norton Juster I have learn each few years considering I was once 10. One of the first-class youngsters books ever. Then I bought into horror and sci fi as an option to "The Classics" comparable to Jane Eyre and Dickens. Douglas Adams books too. There are simply too many. Always influenced to learn, begged for guide tokens for birthday offers specially. Now I love Iain Banks greater than any person. His creativeness os lovely whether or not he's writing sci fi or constant, however bizarre fiction.

If they are too young to read then you should try reading to them. If they are older you should try to set a schedule for reading time. Or you could give $$$ for each book they read. Or if that doesn't appeal to you try telling them that if they reach a certain goal they will get a trip to the toy store or something like that.
Good Luck!

Start reading to them when they are very young.
My granddaughter would sit and look at her books when she was 5 months old, turn the pages and later pretend to be reading them! She is 2 now and loves her books.

Read to them and show them how much fun it can be. Buy lots of different books. I dont know how old your kids are, but if they have a fav cartoon or disney person then buy books that have them in them.

how old are they?
i think reading to kids every night is the best way to get them to spend quality time w/ you As well as learn what books are and how fun they can be. constantly encourage them to draw pictures of what they've learned... read a story to them, and ask them to draw what their favorite part was, etc. eventually when they start learning how to read, encourage them to read to YOU, and applaud them when they sound it out correctly, etc. u can also encourage them to make their own stories and staple them together as their own "book". :) good luck~

Provide them with lots of books, read to them, encourage them to read to themselves, get them a library card of their own, make it fun.

Start out reading to them. Eventurally they will want to do what you do. Make books readily available to them. Make reading part of their everyday routine,
