truth MUST be absolute for example: examine this phrase "all truth is relative" whats wrong with it? if ALL truth is relative than what about the very phrase all truth is relative? brite tiger mentioned the difference between the western either/or philosophy and the eastern both/and philosophy but notice that he implies that we use EITHER western (either/or) OR eastern (both/and)? if we used both/and then we would use either/or thinking AND both/and thinking which doesn't make sense. Endora points out that since there are so many answers to this question truth is based on point of view which would be right IF everyone were actually correct but since people lie and are often wrong this is not true. Wefmeister says that spiritual matters are actually relative while secular matters are not. There is no good reasoning behind this nor any evidence of any kind to support it. This kind of belief is an extreme variant of tolerance it is based on the idea that everybodies religion is correct and all religions are basically the same which comes from the desire to not "offend" anyone. Spiritual matters are not "magically" seperate from secular matters.
Science is theoretically based on absolute truth but of course it isnt always that way. Scientism is a philosophy that science is the source of all truth but only with naturalism and materialism. scientism rejects all non-empirical evidence despite the fact that most of what we know from science is not empirical. science is NOT based on naturalism nor is it incompatible with religion or spiritual matters. people who say otherwise usually have a very small understanding of this subject so what they say is based on prejudice not evidence.

The truth is absolute because it is based what is real. For example, they thought that the atom could not be split, then they found out in 1945 that it could. The truth is that it always could have been split, just before 1945 they didn't know how to.

Like wise there is one truth about God, and if all religions are worshiping Him in different ways, then only one is right.

Matthew 7:21
“Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will.

I believe that the Jehovah's Witnesses teach the truth about the Bible because I took them up on a free home Bible study, and found what they taught to be in line with the Bible. The more I looked into everything, the more obvious it became. For instance, one of the things they are famous for is not celebrating Christmas, where as most other churches do. When you investigate and see how pagan Chistmas is, then you can see that they're right on that one. Then when you check out everything else, they you know.

Truth can only be absolute when it is placed in an agreed upon framework. For example, humans have agreed upon definitions of male and female, so when you say that you are male, we can agree upon the truth.

However, if everyone would have agreed the opposite, that males were females (and vice versa), then we would be in agreement that you are female. Would that then be true? The natural answer to this question is no, that is just silly, because WE know what male and female means. But would it be silly? From another perspective, our agreement of the truth could be seen as equally ridiculous. What matters is the framework in which we place the argument. In our world, that sort of truth is absolute, but it is absolute only because we have agreed that it is.

Based upon these observations, truth is entirely subjective to the human experience. Our species' perception of the universe is, and forever will be, limited to our sensations and experiences. We cannot know anything to be true or false, except when there are agreed upon rules for determining truth. Even the most abstract concepts and ideas come from human minds, and such ideas' truthfulness is usually determined by "proof." However, since the proof we require is a human concept in and of itself, we cannot truly say that things are absolutely true or false. That requires perception from outside of the human experience, but since no one has ever been anything other than human, we are forever limited to a single, and flawed, perspective.

The "truth" (as the X-Files saying goes...) is out there. There does exist a universe around us, with absolutes. We just don't know what they are most of the time. For instance, the exact position of an electron around an atom does exist, we just have no idea where that is at any given time. So yes, absolute truth exists, but we must interpret it by using objective truth.

If you're talking about god and whatnot, there is no answer for your question, since god does not exist. If you're talking about ehtics or morals, those aren't determined by any special force - they are imbred in us to uphold evolutionary principles.

I think there are truths which are objective (1+1=2) and truths which are subjective or relative (you should drive the speed limit). The first is based upon empirical reason and testing, the second based on societal agreement.

Scientific truth is based on facts and provable experiments!

Personal truth is very objective. No two people can see the same picture in exactly the same way! Hence the reason why the Pink Monkey is running around! Crazy people believe crazy crap! You know pink monkey lovers see pink monkeys and ghosts of the pink monkey and the pink monkey on a cross!

Three pink monkeys but really there is only one pink monkey! The philosophy of the insaine!

It would appear if you are talking about the correct amount appearing on your paycheck, or the number of vacation days you are owed, that truth is absolute. If you are talking about matters of morality and spiritual realities and the ultimate destiny of your immortal soul, it is entirely a matter of opinion - or so I have deduced from the response of some on this website.

Absolute. Based on facts.

The western intellectual tradition has tended toward viewing the world in terms of Either/Or: EITHER something is true OR it isn't; EITHER something is subjective OR it is objective; EITHER Arabs are offended by cartoons of their prophet OR they are not. Your question highlights a different paradigm, that of Both/And: it is not problematic for something to be BOTH subjective AND objective; BOTH true AND False. If this way of looking at the world weirds you out, it's probably because you have learned and participate in the Either/Or paradigm.
