I would appreciate info. upon the scope of operations, if possible, and just general stuff about the famed Green Berets. I have an uncle that was/is one and am interested in learning more. He does not speak much about it. However, i do know he was in Vietnam/nom and im not sure but i think i remember hearing he operated with the "Black Sheep". What is the Black Sheep, and did they ever exist? .

The Special Forces have the unique mission of training the local population in the military arts. Basically, they develop armies. They are typically attached as "advisors" to military groups of foreign soldiers. They each have an area of expertise such as communications, medicine, weapons, etc. (I think there are 4 different specializations). They serve in small teams. They are usually deployed in country long before traditional military units are sent in.

Regarding the Black Sheep, that is a Air Force Squadron. They did serve in Vietnam, but they were pilots.

first of all there is no such thing anymore as the green berets that is a nickname from the 60s. the unit is called the special forces and they don't really like to be called the green berets. as to the black sheep it sounds like a unit nickname that was never offical and may be hard to track down, perhaps an A team handle or some such thing. there any number of books on both the modern special forces and those involved in the viet nam war.
