Simple
I could be a serial Killer that had never ever been caught before... I could then apply at the local PD with a clean record and a great background check. I am then Hired as an officer to protect and serve. Would you like that?
Obviously not! The polygraph is another way to screen non qualified applicants. They are able to divulge much more information from their applicants because they believe that the police will know if they are lying. Although the Poly really sucks and can never hold up in court, It still allows the police to see if the applicant may be holding something behind.
If you are thinking about applying, the best and only thing you should do is tell the COMPLETE TRUTH!!!

I can think of several good reasons, but perhaps the best is that there are lots of unstable people in this world with motives that are not suited for quality law enforcement. People bent on revenge, bullies, vigilantes, and weirdos who would love to use the law as a weapon.
The rule of law is to provide a means for mankind to live together in safety. Think of the western movies where the bad guys ARE the sheriff and his deputies. Think of the shake down artists who sell protection to the shop keepers. The list is long for people that should definitely NOT be issued a badge. A polygraph test with a trained administrator and medical evaluation would help isolate and eliminate this type of character.

Just because a person can pass a background investigation and doesn't have a criminal record doesn't mean they aren't engaged in criminal activities. The polygraph helps to weed those individuals out.

Because we only want crooked cop out there who take a "sham pill" before the test is given. They pass and the honest guys fail as everyone has a skeleton in their closet. This has been going on for years. America's finest but if we didn't have them we sure as hell wouldn't need them.

To check on your past and to see if you have anything to hide. I personally don't want a criminal, lying, cheat, druggie cop busting me. I would hope they have some integrity.
