A daguerreotype is a very early kind of photograph, invented mainly by a French guy named Louis Daguerre in the late 1830s. He treated a polished silver plate forming silver halides, exposed the plate, then developed the image with iodine vapors from mercury. The result was a very fragile positive image which was usually mounted behind glass plates to preserve it. There was no negative, so you couldn't make a copy, it was a one use process.
We use silver halide printing today, although by a different method.
