She is 5 foot 1 and weighs 180 lbs and I think that is considered obese. She does not eat fried foods, candy bars, and no colas just water. She is into natural remedies. If anyone knows of a herb or medication with very little side effects please let me know.

There are differnt kinds of thyroid synthetic drugs. The doctor has to find the ideal combination for your mom. Once she is in the right combination of T3, T4 and TSH, she will have no trouble loosing weight. It can be a tricky process and she will learn how to detect the over medication/ undermedication symptoms. If this doctor cannot find the optimal medication for her, she should look for another opinion.

You are correct that both hypothyroidism and menopause may lead to weight gain although once the thyroid function is corrected the weight gain due to hypothyroidism is generally lsot. I would need to know her height and weight to offer an opinion as to how much you worry but I am pleased that you do care about her very much. A body mass index (see below) less than 25 is ideal (mine is 26) while a body mass index more than 30 is associated with premature (younger than age 65 for a woman) cardiovascular events (think heart attack and stroke). Take the weight in pounds and divide by 2.2 to get the weight in kilograms. Take the height in inches and multiply by 2.54 to get the height in centimeters. Divide the height in centimeters by 100 to get the height in meters. Multiply the height in meters by itself to get the height in meters squared. Divide the weight in kilograms by the height in meters squared and you will have your mother's body mass index. Whew. Thank you for your question and thank you for caring about your mother. If you need more specific help regarding weight and weight loss please let me know. As always the very best of luck and health to you and your mother. jermd

Needs to walk at least 90 minutes a day. Walk with her to keep her going. You don't want to see her die.
