There are several types of migraines. A lot of people misuse the word. They say migraine instead of headache. To know if you have a true migraine, you will need to go to a neurologist and be tested.
Here are some signs:
One side of your vision will disappear and if that happens, do not panic. It will be followed by a little mosaic bright light pattern. (Kinda pretty but you can't see enough to read or type). Also kinda scary losing part of your vision which is only temporary.(see note below about partial loss of vision.) Not everyone gets these but the classic migraine headache does.
After the pattern, you will begin to experience the headache. Some migraines last for days and some for just a few hours.
There are other types of migraines called cluster migraines. There are also other reasons you could lose partial vision so that is not wise to ignore.
You really need to see a doctor if you think you are experiencing migraines, because you can be treated. A neurologist or internal medicine doctor will usually give you something to help you eliminate the possibility of getting further migraines with a specific type of drug that prevents your vessels from contracting. The name of this is Inderal and there are several other generic drugs of the same type that work. The doctor may or may not give you this.

There are also other medications you can place under our tongue for migraines; such as Maxalt, Imitrex, but either way, those are only to be taken at onset and need a prescription to get.

I'm trying to give you the most accurate information. Doctors usually prefer not to give you prescription pain medications. Also, do not follow advice on this line about what you should take, because you need to consult a doctor if you think you have migraines. You are going to get a lot of email about all kinds of remedies instead of describing what the symptoms of migraines are.

Anyway, the symptoms vary from individual to individual, so, again, see a doctor. I have just listed above the medications that treat the migraines, and not suggesting you take them. I know a lot of people do not like to be referred to web site, but WebMD will give you the causes, the symptoms, etc.

Best wishes to you.

Migraines can manifest themselves in many ways. I get blurred vision, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound and it feels like a herd of Clydesdale's is running through my head. Some people see flashes of light, double vision, or even pass out from the pain and dizziness. I know one is coming when I get a pain above one eye, and it gradually progresses from there till I cant stand it anymore and want to shoot myself in the head......migraines can really disrupt your life, and can come on out of no where...if you have any one of these symptoms accompanying a headache, just tell your doc, and maybe you can get something stronger than Tylenol and Excedrin.....you can get them once a month or once a day, it all depends upon many variables, and your diet is one of them....google migraines and you will learn more than I can tell ya....

I suffer from Vertigo with episodes of sycope (passing out) I actually got discharge from the army for it.. Vertigo is usually caused by an inner ear problem, However it can be heart related as well. The can couple together to make the problem worse as well. When you get the vertigo to have a collapse of vision at all? Best advise is to go see a nurologist have him hook you up to the head machine and do some tests. OK just read more of your question .. tunnel vision thats how my syncope started... as my doctor explained to me.. when you get dizy (vertigo) And you begin to get tunnel vision if it collapses fully its syncope, then your heart jumps into overtime pumping adrenalin tring to essentially reboot your brain so you can wake up.
