An essay is a discourse. It presents an idea. It's goal is to persuade.

A report is a collection of details. It presents information. It's goal is to educate.

An essay is your thoughts and ideas put into words. A report is comments on what somebody else thinks. You might go to Google with search words "Essay Definition" and "Report Definition"
