For me Ithaca 20 guage side by side for pheasant hunting. It was my Gramps gun and I love it.
From wikipedia, not really sure what your question is.
A shotgun is a firearm typically used to fire a number of small spherical pellets called shot. The shot is usually fired from a smoothbore barrel; another configuration being the rifled "slug" barrel, which is used to fire a single projectile. Since the power of the exploding charge is divided among the pellets, the energy of any one ball of shot is fairly low, making shotguns useful primarily for hunting birds and other small game. However, the large number of projectiles makes the shotgun useful as a close-combat weapon or defensive weapon, where the short range ensures that many of the projectiles of shot will hit the target (see riot shotgun and combat shotgun). Ammunition for shotguns is referred to as shotgun shells, shotshells, or just shells (when it is not likely to be confused with artillery shells). Single projectile loads are generally called shotgun slugs or just slugs.

If you are looking to buy one get a Browning Gold Hunter in 24 or 26 inch barrel,The Benneli is great but they are a pain to unload due to having to press a button after ejecting each shell. In a pump you might not want to go so expensive because there is less that can go wrong therefore quality really doesn't matter.

12 guage is best all arounder. I prefer pump for reliability and ammo capacity vs semi-auto or single shot/double-barrel.
I have a Mossberg 835 (3.5") with barrel combo and I love it, good value, and fine quality. Little on the heavy side for clay shooting but love that extra reach of the 3.5" shells and 3.5" slugs are very impressive.
