One Manhattant block going north/south is approximately 285 feet.

It takes four north/south blocks to equal one east/west avenue. So an avenue would be about a tenth of a mile.

20 blocks = one mile
4 avenues = one mile

When I was walking around in Manhattan, my reckoning was that walking north/south between the numbered streets, 1 mile was about 20 blocks. Travelling east/west between the avenues, 1 mile was 4 blocks. I reckoned on this based on how long it takes me to walk a mile.

There are long blocks and short blocks. Street to street is short; avenue to avenue is long. I don't know what it is in feet, I just know it takes longer to walk one than the other.

If you are heading from 42ns to 43rd to 44th etc..
it takes about30 to 60 seconds to walk.
If you are heading from 7th to 6th etc.
It takes about 2 minutes to walk.
I don't think anyone has exactly measured block by block, but the up and downtown blocks are quick and short versus the cross town blocks.

street to street (north to south)
or
avenue to avenue (east to west)?

The streets are closer together than the avenues, making each block a rectangle, rather than a square
