It is supposed to be a symbol of the rank of your power!!!
Standard tends to be for 8K-20K p.a.
Silver, offered by some is for 15K-20K p.a.
Gold is for 20K to 30K
Platinum is for 30K upwards
The Black Card of American Express tends to be for the rich
(These levels vary from issuer, and are not set as standard)
The higher up the scale, the better facilities you tend to find, including better limits etc.
However, they are just symbols, and carry no major importance. I don't let a colour of a piece of plastic judge how good a person is. I turned down some platinum cards, settled with a Standard card and be done with it.

Huge credit limit, low charges, that's about it. When I got mine, my credit limit jumped to 10 times my previous limit - and I didn't ask for an increase.
They still have that really annoying safety feature on it - any more than 10 or 12 transactions in a day, they'll request voice authorisation on every subequent transaction - that happened to me last Christmas, doing everything last minute as usual! Highly embarrassing! Especially since I had lodged money to be operating in credit for all the purchases. When I phoned them before my next spree day, they told me it was an inbuilt feature and they couldn't turn it off. Such a pain in the neck!

Contratry to some answers here, you do not have to have a high income to obtain a Platinum credit card. Excellent credit, yes, but not tons of dough. They do have a higher limit than most, and low apr.
Plus they look nice to flash out of your wallet to attract the ladies if that's the kind of girl you are into!

They're higher credit limits, for the long time customer or people with high incomes!
I got one first time I applied for a credit card, because I'd been with that bank for a long time.

Nothing really...The credit card company's believe if they offer you a "platinum" card...it will give you a false sense of being wealthy, because platinum is the most expensive precious metal.....Marketing strategy.

Once upon a time it meant you had a card with a huge limit.
Now-a-days- it means nothing.
Gold Cards, Platinum Cards, etc.. they all use to mean status, privelige, but not anymore.
