I came to NZ from Britain in 1968 and apart from some overseas trips I've been here ever since. There are good surfing beaches all round the coasts. The most popular would be Piha, about 30 km from Auckland, but just along the road from my place, in the far south, there's Colac Bay and Oreti Beach. Yup, you can get GPS navigators in cars here. A few weeks back I met some Australian visitors who had a camper van with a GPS device that knew where they were and gave a running commentary about places they passed. What does BTW mean? About half the country's population live near Auckland. It doesn't get very cold there even in winter, but down here it does. We get a fair bit of rain and wind in the winter, but it's nowhere near as cold as most parts of North America and Europe. Even Greece, Sicily and Virginia get colder winters than Southland.

There R 4 main Islands in NZ. North Island, South Island. Stewart Island and the West Island. Leave the West Island out as it got a lot of Australians on it. North Island I would head for Gisbourne/Napier on the east coast or Taranaki/New Plymouth on the west coast. Both off the beaten track & therfore cheaper. The top of the South Island is great. Remember though the further bsouth U go the bleaker the winter.

Yes, great place. I'm originally from Los Angeles and have been in NZ now since 1992, and it's a great place with lots to offer. Surfing, skiing, kayaking, mountain and rock climbing, jet boating, biking, you name it!

dude if you are thinking about moving here then there are more important things than deciding if you can get the best ski ing or surfing. you need to have a visa and a job and somewhere to stay first.

It's a cool country and if you decide to come you'll love it. check out the nz immigration site that'll be your best place to start

Quite a few people still live in New Zealand. But most have moved or are packing now to come to Australia the capital of New Zealand so you may as well come here first save moving later.
