other than the mess they like to leave behind yes i would definatly have and do have a chicken as a pet,i have a blue cochin hen who is the love of my life, she "sings" to me,especially in the morning when she lays her egg crawls in to my lap to be petted and follows me every where, they make great pets, though i would never ever let her roam around the neighborhood that is just asking for her to get hit by a car or eaten by a fox,cat or neighbor's dog

I would not BUY one, I've raised them some from an incubator. A couple of the ones from the incubator think I am their "mom" and are like pets, when I spend my time to train them not to do certain things in my house they can be quite the pet. Believe it or not all my dogs cats, and chickens...yeah to include to other gazillion pets I have, get along well. Meaning raising, training, time, calm nerves. No poop in my home, just a lot of antics.

I once had a rooster. I got him as a chick along with 3 quail chicks; they were running around together on the street. He was friendly but developed an uncomfortable "peck reflex." Seemingly at random times he would peck, and especially at people's feet and legs. There didn't seem to be any hostile intent. Maybe hens don't do this.
We learned to avoid his pecks, and he got along well with the dogs. One dog played with him, rolling balls for him (which he didn't know what to do with) and playfully pretending to bite his neck. I had to separate him from his "clutch-mate" quail, because of his peck reflex and the fact that the quail weren't afraid of him. They still hung out together on opposite sides of the fence.
I did enjoy this rooster, and brought him in the house sometimes.

I wouldn't. Chicken poop all over the place. I don't know if they can be litter box trained or not. You'd have to get one as a chick or hatch it yourself in order for it to enjoy being handled I think. My chickens are outside and roam free, but sleep in their house or in the horse barn. They don't like people, but I haven't tried taming them either.

Hmm well I have three chickens who are currently living inside (bantam silkies), although not as actual housepets, my cats would eat them. It is entirely possible though, provided one doesn't mind changing chicken-diapers and wiping chicken-butts 5 times a day, as they can't be litter trained or trained to go outside (they have no muscular control over their movements).

It depends on your indoor setup. But yes, I would because my house is big enough to create his space and they're wonderful pets.

I wouldn't. It would make me feel guilty everytime that I ate chicken, and I'm not ready to become a vegetarian anytime soon!

No I would not. They are nasty and dirty. I strongly disagree with your assessment of their intelligence. I've kept chickens for many years and have found them to be particularly stupid. I keep them to help keep parasites in the barnyard down, they lay eggs as a by product. It is their nature to roam and forage for food during the day and come back to the same spot to roost at night. So they could be taught to use a doggy door but it's not because they are smart it's because they are hungry.
