I don't know much about the military but I think he mentioned that he knows that "officers" can resign but doesn't know if he can (I'm not sure what the opposite of an "officer" is). Also, his enlistment was voluntary (he was not drafted).

No, you cannot resign. A newer person in the Military is under contract for a certain amount of years. When under a contract for years, your out of luck, do your time and do it well. For the army, after you reach pay grade E-6, their next reenlistment will be indefinate, not for years, same as officers, after their contract for so many years, they too are indef. ONLY when someone is indef, they can put in paperwork to TRY to resign or retire. It is not a guarantee. Officers can, however, resign their commission to become enlisted (E6).

Yes officers can resigns their commision but they still might have to serve till their commintment has ended. I suggest he talk to his superioirs and voice his concerns to them. If he has valid reasons they might let him out of his reamining time.

only officers can resign, if he want's he could get kicked out for screwing up, but I'm sure he doesn't want that...

Not really, no. Ifhe re enlisted for money or choice of orders, he has to fulfill his contract.
