We took in a stray kitten for a night two nights ago. He had diarrhea, but after we fed him some solid foods, it got better. Now our kitten has diarrhea. Could she have caught something and it this serious enough to take her to the vet? She's up to date on all of her shots.

It is possible that the new kitten carried in something that your kitten caught. There are any number of things that can cause digestive problems. You have to be careful, especially with small kittens and diarrhea. They can dehydrate rather quickly.

If your kitten is eating and drinking like normal, and the other kitten is better, there is no emergency. I would keep an eye on things to be on the safe side.

In the meantime, schedule a vet visit for both of them, and when you go, take a poop sample from each of them. Try to make it as soon as possible. The vet can take a look at the poop under a microscope and see if there is a reason for the diarrhea. When you call for the appointment, be sure to tell the staff the reason you want the appointment. They should understand how serious diarrhea can be for kittens.

If it get worse before you can get an appointment, then your best bet would be to call an emergency vet clinic.

A kitten that young could easily die from dehydration. If the diarrhea is severe or has been going on for more than one day, I advise you to get the cat to the vet right away.

You should call the vet to see if it is necessary to take her to the vet. A change in diet can cause diarrhea.
