Mon is for masculine words and words which begin with a vowel
Ma is for feminine words
Mes is for plural words, whether they are masculine or feminine
eg:
mon boulot = my job
mon ami = my friend
ma maison = my house
mes lentilles = my contact lenses
Also remember that it doesn't matter whether you are male or female, you denote possession according to the gender or the word
So whether you are a boy or a girl, you would say "ma maison" for my house. The same is true for son, sa,ses and ton, ta, tes etc.

They're possessive adjectives (my---) and depend on the noun following.
Mon ami, however, and words beginning with A all use Mon.
Ma table = my table because the object is feminine
Mon copain = my (male) friend
Mes is plural. Mes livres, my books. Mes is used for both because it has no gender marker in it.
