It is used to treat Bipolar disorders:
Seroquel
quetiapine (KWET eye ah peen)
This is the most important information you should know about Seroquel?
• Call your doctor immediately or seek medical attention if you experience uncontrollable movements of the mouth, tongue, cheeks, jaw, arms, or legs.
• Call your doctor immediately or seek medical attention if you experience fever, sweating, severe muscle stiffness (rigidity), confusion, fast or irregular heart beats. These could be symptoms of a potentially fatal side effect called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS).
• Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Seroquel may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.
• Dizziness may be more likely to occur when you rise from a sitting or lying position. Rise slowly to prevent dizziness and a possible fall.
• Avoid alcohol during treatment with Seroquel. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by Seroquel.
• Use caution in hot weather and during exercise to avoid becoming overheated during treatment. It is easy to become dangerously dehydrated while taking Seroquel

Quetiapine (Seroquel) is indicated for the short term treatment of schizophrenia and for the short term treatment of bipolar dysthymic disorder (which people most often refer to as manic depressive). Bipolar dysthymic disorder may present with mania only, depression only, or both. It is a frequently missed diagnosis and I have missed it myself and it is thought to be more common than previously suspected. The company that manufactures quetiapine is marketing it very heavily to physicians and I am concerned that it may as a result be overprescribed. Side effects to the drug are quite common which emphasizes that the diagnosis should be fairly certain before the physician potentially poisons the patient. In my limited experience initiating quetiapine in acutely ill people with schizophrenia side effects have limited its value and I suspect that other drugs may be preferred. Quetiapine may be used alone or with other drugs for both schizophrenia and bipolar dysthymic disorder. Similar to my experience in schizophrenia the need to relatively 'rapidly' increase the dose of quetiapine in manic patients side effects have limited its value. By rapid I mean the dosage increases recommended by the Food and Drug Administration as based upon previous study. In those who are not acutely ill such as dysthymic patients with depression slower titration of dose allows quetiapine to be better tolerated but it should be remembered that it is approved for short term use only so I wonder if even in this case there are not better choices. Thank you for your question.
