In my main room, I have light coloured walls with a light coloured CD shelf.

I now have a new shelf which I intended to put above the CD shelf for my DVD's, however this new shelf is a dark colour that matches my desk.

Do I take the shelf back to the shop (45 minutes to Ikea) to exchange for a light one to match my other shelf

Or do contrasting shades work??

What are your thoughts???

Contrasting shades do work.
You should put it up above, but not attach it to the wall, maybe hold it up with books and stand back to see how it looks. Then make your decision from there.
You could try to put some other items in the room of similar colour to the dark and light shelf so that you have the contrasting look going on through the room.

The only thing worse than a trip to Ikea is the trip you have to make to take things back.

But in your heart of hearts you know the odd shelves will always annoy you.

But... the 90 min round trip is a huge waste of petrol for a cheap shelf and there is probably a B&Q, Homebase, Wickes etc nearer to you. Consider varnishing the lighter shelf to match the new one. That way you can keep the smell of Swedish meatballs out of your nostrils a little longer, and do your duty by a) the gods of style b) your purse c)the planet.

You may need a bit of sandpaper to get a 'key' on the shelves. Your bleeding fingernails will help you to fix this incident in your mind and remember not to guess colours/measurements etc next time you visit everyone's favourite furniture warehouse.

I think it will be ok! You could introduce dark and light colours in other things, like picture frames and vases to tie it all together if you feel that it stands out too much. I think it will work well a few dark items in the room. It'll give depth and contrast to the whole room!

If the shelves are wood, can you paint one of them? Or, place some "dark" colored accents on the lighter shelf to kindof tie the two together or vise/versa?

paint em or stain em to whatever you like!
but at the end of they day if you look at it n it looks alright thats all that matters! never mind what anyone else thinks.
There are a lot of things that dont match in my house n i love it. its different and quirky, things stand out instead of blending into the background!
