"who so ever looks upon a woman with lust in his heart has commited adultrey already".
What if your not married?
Are you then still held to that standard?

Good question. I believe the gist of the teaching as in all the rest of the teaching from the Sermon on the Mount is that, external obedience to a set of rules is not sufficient to satisfy the requirements of God's Law. There must be a corresponding heart attitude. For instance, most people would not consider robbing a bank because of the consequences, however many would not hesitate to rob the bank if they were assured they could get away with it. These then are no different than someone who actually attempts to rob a bank, except that they are to cowardly to carry out their evil plan. God requires not only that we do what is right, but that we do it for the right reason. However I would add that every man may be tempted by the beauty of a woman so far as fleshly desire is concerned, but morality is an issue of the will - whether we permit ourselves to be carried away with evil desire, or deny, say no to, our evil inclinations.

Adultery is any sex out of wedlock, and thinking about a sin is the same as committing a sin. If you're not marrying then the bible says you shouldn't being have sex at all, so yes you are held to the same standard.

On the other side of this it is important to understand that we are all sinners and that the tiniest lie is as bad as the worst sexual immorality in God's eyes and also that Paul said "all things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful" meaning that as Christian's we are already forgiven for everything we have ever done or will do and that we are free of the punishment of breaking the law of God, however, God set out these laws for a reason, because they are beneficial to us as well as glorifying to him and as such breaking these God-laws has natural consequences that we are still subject to.

Yes you are. You have committed a sin. If you look at a person of the opposite sex in a lustful way you have comitted adultery to your relationship with Jesus if you are not married.

We are instructed to walk in the Spirit and not to fulfill the lust of the flesh. In no way did God create us to lust.Jesus went into the wilderness to be tempted, as He was lead by the Spirit. This was to do battle against the devil, and He proved Himself to us victorious. We on the other hand are tempted and drawn away of our own lust, ( and enticed ).When we find sin enticing, it is the Spirit of God trying to warn us to turn and go the other way.We often hear that if we resist the devil he will flee James 4:7b, but that is only half of that verse. The first part says we are to(Submit)yourselves therefore to God. James 4:7a. without submission to God in everything we do, we will constantly be falling. We need to do as Jesus, be lead of the Spirit in these matters. Also temptation is not sin, until it brings forth the fruit. We serve a very loving and understanding God who is very willing to give us the weapons needed to have the Victory over this flesh, and that liar. Praise God !

that is the sin of lust, not adultery.

Note Jesus’ words: “You heard that it was said, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone that keeps on looking at a woman so as to have a passion for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”—Matt. 5:27, 28.

Here Christ was explaining that the seventh of the Ten Commandments should have meant more to his Jewish listeners than simply avoiding the physical act of adultery. (Ex. 20:14; Deut. 5:18) He traced the crime to a person’s heart. As James later explained, wrong desires in the heart can, and often do, lead to acts of sin. (Jas. 1:14, 15; Prov. 6:25) That occurred with David, who looked on and became aroused toward another man’s wife, leading to his sin of adultery. (2 Sam. 11:2-4) So Jesus urged his listeners to avoid, not just a sinful act in itself, but the sinful lust that can lead to sinful acts.

If someone, male or female, cultivates such lustful desire (“keeps on looking at a woman”), God knows it for He “sees what the heart is.” (1 Sam. 16:7; Prov. 24:12; Heb. 4:13) God realizes that the person who fully desires to commit immorality may simply not yet have had the opportunity to turn his desire into action. So that person is already reprehensible in God’s eyes.

There is a big difference between attraction and lust and I always figured Christ was making that distinction too. People were programmed to be sexually attracted to each other and to have sex. Were are also programmed to engage in sex to bond as much as to reproduce. It's meant as something you do to build a relationship. When you engage in "lust", you're not concerned about building a relationship or bonding with a mate. You are concerned about getting yourself off and denying that natural bond. That CHOICE to deny nature is where I believe you find the sin Christ was addressing.

yes...all sex outside of marraige is called fornication and the bible is clear it's a sin. We humans do not just sin in deed but in thought. Jesus was bringing that into focus for the pharisees that kept the law outwardly but inside they were hateful, self righteous and hypocritical. He levels the playing field by letting us in on the truth. SIn is anything in thought or deed that does not live up to God's perfect will. That makes us all sinners and in need of Christ.

Biblical adultery can only apply when a married woman secludes herself with another man.

With two exceptions, sinful thoughts are not sins. Those exceptions are jealousy (coveting) and idol worship.
