Ok so I'm thinking about getting a koi tattoo up my right side from my hip up to my ribs, but I would want to get something afterwards going up my left side. Any ideas of what would compliment it. By the way I'm getting the koi because of it's sybolism, and would want a sybolic tattoo on my left side as well. All ideas are welcome. Thanks!

I have 5 tattos as of now, one on each shoulder blade, the lover back, base of my neck and my ankle. I was thinking another koi, dragon or phoenix bird. I am a bit worried about the rib cage area being painful, but I think I can handle it.

Im sure about the synbolism your referring to. If the koi is representing the determination to the end, against adversity and all that jazz and you will have it done swimming up stream, then a dragon would the best choice. The old Chinese tales say that when a Koi reaches the end of the river after swimming up stream from the ocean he would turn into a dragon.

Just remember a few things, what are the tats going to look like when you are 60 or 70 years old, will you be able to cover them up when you need to for employment, how will you explain them to future children and grandchildren. I think a tattoo covering your entire side is a little much no matter what the symbolism (I have several tattoos so I am not discriminatory) especially if you are female. Oh yeah one more thing, if you have never had a tattoo the rib cage is one of the most sensitive spots and will hurt like h***......

do a yen yang type idea koi up on the right and either a koi swiming down on the left, or a dragon symbolizing a change from water to land. sweet.

Well foremost, I would like to say that if you do get a tattoo, make sure the symbolism is correct. Nothing funnier than a person walking around with Chinese characters that spell out "S*it Head". I think you should do a duplicate, the one you get on one side, get it on the other, that would look pretty good, figuring you got the body to show em off.

Just for future reference, the rib cage is painful.

I have 15 tattoos, and my most recent one was done on my ribcage.

Everyone said I "took it like a man," but in reality, I was clenching my teeth so hard, they hurt for days afterwards. Lol.

It's worth it, though, if you're going to have a beautiful tattoo to show for it afterwards. :)

Good luck!

Dragon would balance it nicely, but there are so many things that would look good with it...look through some books...

What about those awesome Japanese waves with the frothy crests? Cherry blossoms are always nice, but keeping with the nautical/sea theme...
