I am looking for a hypo-allergenic cat, one that has not been altered male or female. When I say hypo-allergenic I mean a cat like the kind Allerca.com is selling, with a reduced Fel d 1 glycoprotein not the supposedly hypo-allergenic siberian cats. I cant afford one for 4000 dollars so I need to find my own. The Fel d 1 glycoprotein is naturally divirgent in some cats i think 1 in ever 50,000, I really need to find one! Help please!

The allerca kittens are not gentically engineered. They were able to test large amounts of non-altered cats who had a natrually reduced amount of the glycoprotein and when a cat was found that natrually was hypo-allergenic it was bred to another cat and thus the litter became hyp-allergenic because of the reducded glycoprotein was a dominant gene.

It's a scam. If you do more research than just reading their website, you will learn that their claims have never been proven in an independent labratory. Read the website. They tell you that the kittens are hard to come by because of a long waiting list. BUT!! If you want to pay $3000-$5000 extra, they can give you a "reserved" kitten. How do they know how many kittens to "reserve"? How do they miraculously have a kitten for everyone who pays the additional fee? That makes no sense. Maybe some allergic people won't react to these cats. But that's true of every cat. Every cat is different, and every person with allergies is different. You can't predict (or breed) a hypo allergenic cat.

There's no such thing other than those genetically engineered ones they are trying to clone. Trust me, you don't want a hypo-allergenic cat - they are science projects!!! You want a real, natural kitty cat. If you have allergies, get immunotherapy treatments (shots) They work. You will build up your own immunity over time and will be able to cease treatment. DON'T SUPPORT ALLERCA. THEY ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN PROFITS, NOT THE WELFARE OF THE ANIMALS THEY EXPERIMENT ON!

While those were purely bred for allergic people, and you arent going to pay a hefty price for them- you have three options.
1) Get allergy shots for yourself.
2) Dont get a cat. Try another animal.
3) Get a Sphinx, a hairless cat.

Same problem. I had a kitten i was allergic to. I really love cats. Fel d 1 is something to so with the saliva so when they clean they have it on their fur you touch them and you react its as simple as that. If you find a solution let me know! Good luck!
JUST SO PEOPLE KNOW... A HAIRLESS CAT WILL NOT SOLVE YOUR ALLERGY!! Just thought I should say. It is not a solution!

The cats you are referring to have been genetically engineered to be hypoallergenic and that's why they have such a hefty price tag. The hairless breeds tend to be less allergenic as they have less dander, no haircoat for it to stick to. But they are not allergen-free.

good luck, doesnt sound easy to find. if you are allergic to cats, why get one? why not get another animal you arent allergic too? if you must have one. search the internet. eventually you will find one. go to yahoo.com or askjeeves.com and type in the name, go through the many pages of web links and just click on them and eventually something will pop up but it might take time..and patients.
