This might seem silly, but I've been fostering him and he's my baby, and I want to make sure he gets the best home possible.

My boss says its hard to adopt out black cats because ppl just dont want them. (I work for a shelter that works through PetSmart to adopt out animals)

I know a lot of people dislike black cats because they're 'plain' or because there are so many superstitions about them. It's really unsafe for them around Halloween especially.

So, at the adoption agency, I'm wondering what the likely hood is that a good home will want him? I mean, if you were shopping and saw an all black kitten, and 12 other kittens of color and patterns and calico, would you go with the black?

I know this may sound dumb, but I'm his mom (and I over-worry/think things) and I want a damn good home for him.

I work at a cat shelter and we do have a harder time adopting out black kittens. People either just do not want a black one, they still have superstitious feelings about them, or whatever. The other problems is the amount of black cats!!!Since it is a dominant color, there are black kittens in just about every litter we see.

But, with a little time and effort, we do get them great homes!!!!

Once people see him, someone will love him!!!!!

(a lot of people don't like calicos and torties either!!! People aware of their tendency toward "attitude" may just love a black boy!!!!)

You know that's weird, I am with the Human Society (no kill) and also volunteer for them at PetSmat on the weekends. I only work with the cats. I will say that most of the shelter kitties we have are black. They stay with us for a long time. People just don't want a blk cat, and it is sad because to me they make the best pet. Although I would never call my little baby girl "Meek" a pet. She is a all blk Manx found in the road when she was 4wks old. I couldn't let her go. My last baby was an all blk domestic cat. Most of the people I work with have blk cats because they are so hard to adopt out. I try really hard to look into the background of the people who are looking for a blk cat, see if they have ever had a blk cat before, do they believe in all the superstition that involves the cat and the reason for wanting a blk cat. If someone comes in looking just for a blk cat, ask a lot of questions, look at how they are dressed. You can tell a lot about a person on first appearance. Also, go with what your heart tells you. I wish you the best of luck. Give the baby a little rub for me, thanks!
Have a Merry Christmas.

Well, a vast majority of people like Calicos..so they will always be the first to go.

Secondly, kittens always seem to go fast...so if he is a baby still, he'll be adopted fast.

I know quite a few people that look for an all out black cat....or the opposite.

You should have no trouble getting him a home through Petsmart....and you dont have to worry if he is going to a good home because you'll see who is taking him and he'll go into a financially stable family because its like $70 to adopt a cat at petsmart. Most people who arent financially stable get stray cats or "free kittens."

Which in the end, the cats from the latter dont get much of the good food and sometimes become strays themselves.

I know from my family (being financially OK) to my boyfriends family (financially not OK).

So basically, anyone who would spend $70 on a cat is going to give the cat what it needs.

its ok to be over protective of the little guy! he sounds really sweet but i dont think ull have any problems finding him a home! i would put up fliers and ads in the paper for ppl. to either goto the shelter and ask about him or goto ur house and check him out! if hes healthy, and happy, u shouldnt have a problem finding him a home! u seem like u have ur priorities striaght for putting him first! but deff. keep doing w/e ur doing and hell find a great home! i had two black cats and they were always the best cats ive ever had! and if i say a black kitten sitting there all by himself w/ colorful kittens i would probably pick him but its not all about the color its about the personality he gives off! if hes fun and has a good personality hell be gone be4 u know it! hope this helps! good luck finding ur baby boy a home! =)

All-black cats are one of my top 5 favorites. I would own one in a heartbeat. www.petfinder.com is a good place to find a home. And Halloween is over, so the nutjobs should be quiet until next year. Most people are going to be good owners, and going through an adoption agency means that the new owner will be screened.

I love black kittens and cats! I prefer grey ones, because mine is grey, so I am a mum of a grey cat and they remind me of my baby, but before adopting my cat I liked black kittens best! Actually last spring I found two abandoned black kittens and I managed to find a nice home for both of them together! They were so cute, i would have kept them, but my cat wanted to kill them. Isn't there any way you can keep the little one? I am sure he will have the best life with you! You are his mum already! When we saved ours from the street, we tried to find a home for him, but we loved him so much that no one was good enough to get him. And we couldn't be separated from him. Now we can't imagine being without him. Think about it, cats are not such a big trouble, they are independent and self-cleaned.

I'm with you - we just fostered a litter of 5 of which 4 were black. We kept one of the black ones and turned the other 3 in to the shelter. That was early the week of Thanksgiving and they are all 3 still there. :( I love the little guy that I kept, he's so totally sweet. We prayed over the ones at the shelter that they would get good homes.

I own an all black kitty and he is the best cat in the world. I had always wanted a pure black cat because I think they are gorgeous and look like minature panthers. he is getting a little older now, and some white hairs are devolping.

I do not think you will have much of a hard time. There are people everywhere that love cats no matter their color.

I also work in the cattery at my local SPCA. I find it dangerous to adopt out black cats/kittens around Halloween time...but the rest of the time, you just have to let people pick the cats they are interested and let them interact. We haven't had too many black cats go out, which makes me quite sad. One thing you can emphasize to the people who come in to look is that it is never the color or appearance of the cat that makes it a good "fit" for them, it is the temperament! If you find a couple who is unhappy with a hyper calico, try to introduce them to the calmer black cat.......I too think of the cats as my little babies...I love them! :)

I don't think it would be too hard to adopt out an all black kitten. I adopted an all black kitten 2 years ago and it was the best choice I made. I was told that black cats are spooked easily and that they don't make good pets, but I have to completely disagree. Hope I could help :)
