One should only pick up a cat using channel-lock pliars, by the scalp. This is the best method to reduce the likelihood of inducing unnecessary stress and injury to the animal.

Scruffing a cat isn't cruel (this is grabbing a handful of skin on the neck behind the head) but you shouldn't lift a full grown cat this way, they're too heavy. I'ts painful and can bruise if the cat is bigger. Never a good idea to carry by the tail, it won't support their weight and can get sprained. You can scruff them with one hand and support the hindquarters with the other arm, carrying them tucked next to you like a football. Why are you trying to hold the cat anyway? If it's to medicate it, have the vet's office show you proper technique. Otherwise, just let the cat be.

NO! Pulling on a cat's tail can cause nerve damage since the nerves are wrapped around the base of the tail. This nerve damage can cause problems with walking and bladder control. And it's very painful to the cat. Also, cats can be hurt by being picked up by the scruff of their neck. An adult cat may pick up their kittens this way in order to move them but it's not good to handle a cat in this manner, especially an adult cat, as it can also cause damage. The best way to pick up your cat is to hold one hand under the rib cage and the other supporting the hind legs. Remember, if you're nice to your cat then your cat will be nice to you. Have fun!

You should never pull a cat or kitten up by the tail.

Holding a cat by the scruff on the back of their neck is OK, but it's best to pick them up by putting a hand under their front legs and then lifting up and holding them from underneathe. Holding a fully grown cat by the scruff could hurt it, but sometimes it is necessary if the cat is being aggressive.

No. You should not hold any animal by its tail or around its neck. Cats, especially, should not be held by their tails because they use their tails to re-orient themselves if they jump or fall, and if you damage the tail, you could cause the cat long-term problems. As for the neck, if you're talking about the skin at the back of the neck (the scruff), it won't hurt them, but they don't love it. If you're talking about holding it around its neck, think about it - would you like it if your mom carried you around by yours?

You should cradle animals the same way you would a baby, to the extent you are holding them at all. Animals have four feet for a reason. They do not need to be carried around. You can cuddle them all you want, but let them do their own walking. Carrying them around all the time will not make them nice pets. It will make them neurotic.

Veterinarians many times restrain a cat by the scruff of the neck.

Your sister is not a veterinarian I can assume? She should not pick the cat up by the neck or tail. She may cause damage to the cat

If by then neck, then you must grab the cat by the scruff (bit of extra skin on the back of the neck, cat will curl up no matter how old) NEVER by the tail. Tail can be broken, or worse you can paralyze a cat

It's fine for a mother cat to pick up her kittens by the scruff of their necks but I would not recommend a person picking a cat up like that. Don't touch their tail either. I pick my cats up by putting my hands under their stomachs and gently lifting them up onto my shoulder.

By the scruff of the back of the neck yes it is fine and most recommended especially if you don't know the cat. AS for holding the tail too there shouldn't be any reason too.
