Depends on how you like them and your heat. You have to adjust these depending on how hot the grill is and how far the meat is from the coals or flame. Also, the thickness of the steak is very important. Note that some people get food poisoning eating anything less than well done--how undercooked you can take your meat varies from person to person. It is better to cook more slowly (lower heat) for more time, so it gets done all the way through--higher heat means you are more likely to have the burnt on the outside raw on the inside problem.
For a one inch thick steak three or four inches above somewhat hot (350 degree F) coals, the flip time is about:
Blue--30 seconds
Rare--2 minutes
Med Rare--4 minutes
Medium--5 minutes
Med Well--6 minutes
Well--8 minutes
After that you need to cook the other side--adjust the time by how done the first side ended up.
You can check doneness by pushing on the meat with your finger when you learn how it is supposed to feel. Until then, you have to slice the meat in an inconspicuous place and peek at it to see how the center is cooked to be sure. You can squeeze a little juice out of it to see what color it is--if it is rare it will be red, when it is brownish clear it is med-well or well-done.
It takes practice, and these are guidelines--there are a lot of variables to consider that affect the time you need to cook it.

It depends on the doness, I was a chef for 20 yrs and worked in a number of steakhouse's, if you want rare about 3-4 mins per side, medium 4-5 minutes, medium well 5-6 minutes and well can be 6-8 minutes, thickness and the temparture of the BBQ, and if you want them to cook faster or quicker, make sure they are room temparture, a cold steak can take 3-5 minutes longer to cook.
If you applying sauce it should be done only in the last few minutes to prevent burning, things like chicken or spare ribs you might want a crust of sauce, on a steak it might be a deterant. The same goes for seasoning do it right before you cook, unless you are cooking flank or balde steak were a marinate might be useful to aid in the cooking.

I love cooking steaks! It took me quite a while and I tried several different method before I got anything to taste good. This is what I do. First heat up the grill very hot. Like 500 degrees. One expert said 700 degrees. Put you steaks on the grill over the hotest spot for 1 and a half minutes on each side. Turn over with tongs. Then move the steaks to a cooler area ot the grill (not over the coals) and cook with in-direst heat for three minutes for rare. 5 for medium. Indirect heat mean you put the cover on the grill. Put the BBQ sauce on them when you move them to indirect heat.

Depends upon the thickness and how people want them done. For me I like them very, very rare, so that would just be a few minutes each side over a hot fire.

A 1" inch thick steak will take 4-5 minutes per side on high heat for rare. 6-7 minutes per side for medium. 8-10 minutes per side for well done.
A 1 1/2" inch steak will require 5-7 minutes per side on high heat for rare. 8-10 minutes per side for medium and 11-13 minutes per side for well done.
A 2" steak will require 6-8 minutes per side on medium heat for rare. 9-11 minutes per side for medium and 12-14 minutes per side for well done.

Depends on how you like them cooked. For us (we like them well done) I cook them 7-8 min. on each side unless they're really thick.
