I don't think so. In my opinion an intelligent being, growing up alone with no parental language for communication would begin making up their own.
I read an article a few months ago about a group of deaf children in a rural community in South America who spontaneously began making up their own sign language. I believe this is very close to what I'm describing above.

hmm...you may want to look into Susan Curtiss's book Genie: a psycholinguistic study of a modern day wildchild. She is the perfect case of learning a language after the "critical period" (puberty) which is the period of time that researchers thought where it would be hard to learn a first language if you haven't learned it already. Also...this has to do with lateralization which means that as you grow, your brain specializes functions such as speech to either the left or right hemisphere of your brain. The research done on Genie has spurred tests on victims of severe head injury who are still able to talk-have syntactic/grammatical sentences- even with a great head injury to their left hemisphere which language functions usually are.
So... right now i think that researchers are at a stage where they are just finding out that language is not as dependant on the brain as they once thought. I don't really know the answer to your question...but if you wanted to do the research...this is where you might want to start! Its fascinating!!!! (other books about this topic also talk about Deaf/Sign Language....so you might want to check out what they say!) Good luck! Fascinating question!

If a species has not developed a language, then it is incapable of intelligent thought. However, nearly every animal has a language of some sort, and bats even have long-term memory. Humpback whales, in fact, have a more complexly constructed language than humans.

I am bi-lingual. When I think, I don't think in terms of a language. In another words, questions such as "what language do you _think_ in?" are totally unanswerable for me. To me, thought is an abstract thing without a need for language. Language is merely a vehicle to express my thought.
In that sense, I think, it is possible to think without a langauge.

You dont need a language for thought. Interesting question though. If you grew up in isolation you would still have a thought process.

You can't mind read everyone so there for if we didn't have a language, and only images in our brains, then it would be pretty quiet, don't you think?

Mankind could think before language developed. People who are deaf mute and blind can also think.
