My cat likes to eat flowers I buy in the home and I was wondering if Pointsetta leaves could kill her?

I heard they could be poisonous but I'm not sure. My boss is giving me one for Christmas so I'm deciding if I should give it away or not.

Although I wouldn't suggest placing numerous poinsettias immediately within your pets' reach, they are not the deadly flower they've been made out to be. they are a low toxicity plant compared to others.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Animal Poison Control Center, the toxicity of this popular holiday plant is based largely on a myth that started at beginning of the 20th century and has been greatly exaggerated through the years.
In reality, if ingested by your pet, the poinsettia plant may cause mild to moderate stomach upset including excessive drooling, vomiting and/or diarrhea, but not the lethal consequences that have been rumored for decades.
However, some other decorative yuletide plants are more harmful.
Mistletoe, if ingested in large enough quantities, can lead to stomach upset, excessive thirst and urination, lack of coordination, a drop in heart rate and blood pressure. In extreme cases, it can cause your pet to have difficulty breathing, experience seizures, coma or death.
Fortunately for pets and their owners, in most cases only small quantities of mistletoe are used in decorations and, if ingested, cause only mild stomach upset.

Get rid of the plant. My husband's childhood cat died from eating a Poinsetta leaf. Don't take a chance. And if she likes to eat leaves....not a good idea!

No poinsettias are not poisonous-as has been said at worst they could give your cat a tummy upset. It's an old wives tale that they are very poisonous-all it takes is a quick google search or ask your vet for those that still believe the old wives tale. However it would still be best to keep them away from your cat to prevent stomach upsets.

The poinsettia is only mildly toxic, not deadly. Symptoms include drooling, throwing up, diarrhea, even if the cat does eat it a lot of it.
So you may want to keep it away from the cat, and/or give the cat a better-tasting vegetable to eat instead.
But you don't have to be scared of poinsettias.

Nooooo! Don't buy a pointsetta. My cat ate a pointsetta plant and we had to rush him to the animal hospital and they said if we would have waited 5 minutes longer he would have been dead.

I have heard that if a cat eats a poinsetta it will poison them, so play safe and don't get one.
