While once only considered a sign of rebellion, the symbolism behind the skull is often more positive than negative. In the Tarot deck, for example, the Death card, often pictured as a skull or skeleton, is a symbol of change - good and bad. One of the more common meanings behind the image of the skull is “memento mori” - Latin for “remember you must die.” The thought might seem depressing at first, but it’s actually a reminder to live life while you can.

The skull can show the victory of death over life and the transience of the human existence (often referred to as “All is vanity”), but the negative impact can be tempered by the belief of some that part of a person’s soul can survive death and triumph. At the same time, it can be a sign of machismo, proof that the wearer of the skull tattoo understand and accepts his or her fate.

The skull image is used in several religious cultures. The Indian god Kali is pictured with skulls in her wrathful form. Within the Kabbalistic tree of life, the skull symbolizes not death but rebirth, and is a celebration, not mournful time. In Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico, the skull is a reminder of death, but it reminds people that while death is a misfortune, it can also be seen as “the ultimate liberation.”

Gamblers enjoy using the skull as a “reverse bad luck” charm, hoping it will bring them good fortune. When used by gamblers, it is often accompanied by black cats and dice rolling seven.

Not all meanings are positive, however. The Nazi SS used the death’s head as a symbol, and many neo-Nazis still use the symbol in tattoos to this day.

I have 15 tattoos, 6 of which involve skulls.

I highly doubt there is something exact that a skull stands for... I got them because I liked them, not because of what they represent.

I think a skull represents loss, transcendence (in a religious and spiritual way that the body stays behind to struggle, but that will vary based on beliefs) and to me it would also mean permanence. Skeletal remains last for a looooong time.

I also think of zombies and horror movies; I love both by the way

just a human head really.
I'd think about that tatt before you sit down in the chair though. I got a skull tattoo'd when i was 18 and i luckily found a GREAT artist to cover it up 2 years ago.

When u get a tatty..make sure it is something u will want on you for the rest of your life..tattoos on a person's body lets people know what u like and how u are...like when a girl gets a tatt on her lower back..or(a tramp stamp) it lets u know that she has been around the block and she is most likely easy..so if u want a skull..make it more original cause i've seen too many of the same tattoo of a skull..oh..and I'd probably get them on both shoulder blades..it would look cooler..but if u want to show everyone how much u appreciate death..then get one in the center of ur shoulder blades with a nice scenery of the setting of death..hope all goes well with whatever u choose!!

A tattoo represents whatever you want it to represent. Everyone has a right to interpret art in their own way.

a skull can mean whatever you want it to. i have a skull tattoo and it reminds me of life, and that it doesn't last. it's a memorial tattoo to two people in my life who died before their lives had been lived to the fullest. my tattoo artist took a picture of a real skull but tattooed it with unrealistic colors. i love it!
