Eat garlic. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. Buy a jar of minced garlic. When you feel a cough coming on, eat a small spoonful of it. That'll relieve it for a while, plus the garlic itself will boost your immune system. When you feel it coming on again, eat another spoonful.

Also, make sure you're living a healthy lifestyle altogether. Regular exercise, eating healthy food, and getting enough sleep will make your body more resistant to disease.

if you have had this 'cold' for a long time, then perhaps it is seasonal allergies rather than a cold -- try taking an antihistimine tablet (ask the druggist to suggest one) -- a few years ago this happened to me and my dr finally suggest taking a Reactin every day for a week or two -- if the symptoms cleared up then it was an allergy --and lo and behold it worked!

Have a good night's sleep, balanced diet, exercise, etc.

Your body may be exhausted because you're not eating right, and it may seem like you have a cold, but you may be run down instead. That's what happened to me a while ago, but once I started eating right, I was OK, and feeling much happier and less "sick".

I was just recently at the doctors and they said over the counter drugs are mostly useless... The best thing you can do (doctors orders) is drink three glasses of water a day and get a humidifier.
