Openoffice and Abisource are two opensource alternatives to MS Office. While not really opensource, there are a few other "free" options like Google Docs and Spreadsheets(which is pretty good,give it a shot), Zoho Office etc.

Whatever you use, the fact, sadly is MS Office is actually the best out there.
