i have bought a Sony Cybershot DSC S500 camera, but am not sure if it will be compatible with either of these two memory stick formats. dont want to invest and repent later.

If you have the Handbook, it will tell you on page 86 and 87...but here is an excerpt...
"Memory Stick PRO Duo with a capacity up to 2GB have beeb confirmed to operate properly with this (DSC S500) camera".

Read the manual, contact a Sony service centre or check out the Sony homepage if you are still unsure

memory stick duo is for the new camera's - smaller size.
memory stick pro duo is for the old camera's - its smaller is size too but comes with a adapter to fit in ur old sony camera.

Safe bet is memory stuck pro duo as it will work in any sony camera or cam corder
