In my opinion, Ailey did his first show and premiered "revelations" which was such a big hit that he could never equal it again in his career. Just my opinion.

My boss for 15 years was in that first company, so sadly all I could offer you would be stories and some gossip. She was dancing on Broadway at the time of his first season and said that everyone would get off the show they were working on and rehearse for Ailey late at night for free.

Another fun tidbit is that his favorite song was "Careless Love."

It is not too late (at 14) to become a good Modern Dancer. Alvin started late and most of the Modern Male dancers. When you stated that you "don't mind taking more than one class a week." sounded very naive. One class a day is more like it. I started late (age 19) and when I first went to New York I was taking 17 classes a week. In 2 years I was in the Martha Graham Company. I did dance with Alvin and Donald MacKayle before Alvin had a company. I was called "The Albino" because I was the only white male dancer in Donnie's company. Suggest you take as many classes as you can. Try to get in the Ailey School and work your way up. This coming summer, you might try to attend The New London Dance Festival. It is a collective of all the most recognized schools of Modern Dance techniques around. By the way: without sounding snobbish, Hip Hop is good aerobics, but has no foundation in real technique. It can ruin and damage your body and give you some very bad habits to break if you are serious about dance. Be careful, and good luck.
