You just have to keep telling them...but if they are teething (especially the molars) it helps them when they chew on tehir fingers. If that is the case...give them a teething ring.

stupid enough I can remember this. When I was small I was helping my mom count pennies one time. The copper on my hands made my thumb taste horrible. I thought my thumb went bad so I stopped sucking on it. goofy. I know. But maybe if you let them carry a few pennies around they wouldn't like the taste anymore.
Also there is a product called "Thumb" It's a nail polish that is supposed to help stop it. Ask at the pharmacy for it. Some places may have to order it. But it's 50/50. Some people said it helped. Others said it didn't. So I don't really know.
I will tell you that pennies taste horrible. YUK!

Put a tinny tiny bit of finger nail polish remover on the tips of their finger nails, and rub it in then wipe it off ,and I bet you they will be keeping those fingers out of there mouths!
My six year old is a nail bighter and that always works for her not to put her fingers in her mouth!
That stuff is strong and will linger on through out the day,and the taste is AWFUL!

My parents always yanked my thumb out of my mouth. When I got older I bit my nails instead, now I bite them till they bleed. Let the kid stop on their own, most do before it does real damage to their teeth, either from no longer needing that kind of comfort, or they are teased by their friends.

There's a special kind of nail polish, edible, just for this sort of thing. It's safe and colorless but it has a bad taste. I've seen it at baby stores and some drug stores. Maybe that will help.

Good luck!
