I love my cat but because of illness, my dr wants me to find a new home for him. He is 11 and throws up hairballs so I haven't been able to find a good home for him. I asked shelters (that don't put cats down) to help but they take in only abandoned cats. I don't want to lie and say he was abandoned, but I don't know how to find a good place for him to live out his life. He's a nice cat. Any suggestions?

Are you anywhere near SC i would take him. I love kitties and could always make room for another. Their are lots of different foods and treats that are good for treating hairballs. I give my cats the treats they have liquid hairball stuff inside and between the two they can eat a whole can in one sitting.

Most cats cough up hairballs, normal if you think that they clean themselves all the time and loose hair end up in their belly. That shouldnt be a problem to anyone who has ever owned a cat and would be familiar with that. His age would be the real obstacle, as most people are after kittens, not grown and especially aging cats, regardless of the fact that older cats are quieter, and just as nice as young ones.

I see you are giving him up because your doctor told you so, because of your illness, if I got this right.
Beware of that advice, doctors rarely care for animals and will tell you to have your pets killed or get rid of them as if it was nothing. How ill are you?

Think of it carefully, is there any absolute need to give your cat away? Especially at that age, he should be very settled and cause you little bother. They sleep all day and eat once (or twice, but once can be arranged). Cleaning the tray for 1 cat is not that bad, once a day or every other day should be enough. If you can't bend down you can feed him on a counter and keep the tray on an elevated platform he can reach. If it's the furball cleaning that bothers you they sell special food against furballs, it helps getting them out the other end! Also, groom him more, brushing the cat is relaxing for you and helps ridding him of dead hair before he swallows them.

At his age it would break his heart to be leaving you, and he shouldn't be put to sleep just for being alive! If you're ill, he will keep you great company and give you love. It also won't be easy to rehome an aging cat.

I would never rehome my cat, not unless I'm in a wooden box six feet under.

Whatever your choice of action, DON'T GIVE HIM AWAY FOR FREE!!!! It will end up in horrible situations if you do, including as dog bait for dog fighting training and tortured for research.

An 11 year old cat is NOT old. He is throwing up hairballs because he needs quality food. You have to try a change in diet to see if this can be corrected (and it can). Don't fall for "hairball" food it is entirely inappropriate for his condition. Get him a food, preferably not dry, that has high quality meat protein and a minimum of fillers, especially corn.

Look at Natural Balance. It has high quality protein and the filler is brown rice in the dry formulation which will be more agreeable to his stomach. I have found Natural Balance at my local pet discount store and it is not that expensive. I would definitely switch him to canned food. I don't use a lot of dry food, sometimes when I do, I get vomiting. None of my six cats EVER vomits on canned food or the raw meat diet I prepare for them.

Cats need food appropriate to their species - meat!

I would talk to the no kill shelters again and explain your situation to them. It seems to me that they should be willing to help. Or maybe you could put an ad in the paper. Say to a good home only, then try to interview any potential adopters. Why does your Dr. say to give up your cat? Do you feel it's the right thing to do? I'm sorry for your situation, and hope you feel better soon!

RELINQUISH A CAT BECAUSE OF HAIRBALLS? Get a different vet, feed hairball formula cat food. Add some suppliments to his food , like MISSING LINK, AND PROZYME. should solve the problem. This is simply outrageous for a vet to suggest this as a solution. I'm afraid you won't find any shelter to take your pet....Have him peacefully euthanized so that he will no longer be a problem for you.

Call your local Animal Control Officer for advise. My friend here in Clinton Ok moves Heaven and Earth to find homes for animals. Hey these guys only seem harmful to people who break the law. I can't help you with the loss you'll feel though. Hopefully the new owner will allow visiting rights. Good Luck man...

At first: you can try it anyway (without lying) at those shelters and be fair. You already have a 'no', but you can only get a 'yes' if you try.

If you - when keeping the cat - aren't getting any sicker then you already are, just keep him.

But, can't you cure the cat? Maybe it's just a mild disease?

Get him a cat food designed to treat hairballs, then you won't need to get rid of him:)
