It is a 1996 CSi 2 litre. I don't know whether this model has a hydraulic or cable clutch. The clutch engages fine, no graunching of the gears, and no slippage. Just very stiff. Answers greatly appreciated!

First off you have a very good car there. I own 4 SAAB's and my '86 9000 has 758K on the same engine and turbo. And since I also own a SAAB shop I can tell you that the cars that come through my doors with constant repair issues can all be traced to one factor, no care/maintainance, period. Now on to your problem. Your have a hydraulic clutch so a couple of things I what you to check first. I am going to assume you have no leakage of fluid in the system and while stiff, it is stiff full travel. First, where does the clutch engage? Do you start to move the instant you bring the clutch pedal off the floor? Or, does it wait until you have almost fully let the pedal out? If it is the latter, you have a worn out clutch and will need to replace it. If it is the prior, you may have a bad pressure plate and/or you need to have the clutch system bled out. Next, check your pedal itself. Do this by checking the free travel portion only. Does it feel free and non-binding? The piviot on the pedal can wear do to off foot operation, aka, side of your foot pressure rather than flat on pressure. This will make travel very stiff. I have had to weld up the piviot and redrill alot of this problem. Next, and this will be a bit harder to do, remove the small plastic cover from the clutch line/bleeder pipe opening. With a good light have a friend slowly push the clutch and watch the release bearings travel. Does it "tilt" as it tries to press the pressure plate? This may be hard to tell but if you watch closely you can see the bearing tilt slightly. If it does you have a problem that does from time to time show up. The slave tube that acts as the slide/guide for the release bearing is worn and allowing the release bearing to "tilt" on the tube and this acts just like a brake metal to metal. Sorry but the cure is to do a clutch job and since you have to pull the tranny you may as well renew the works while your in there. If your clutch travel for engagement is "normal" as to where it engages, and the clutch does not slip in 4th and 5th gears you may just want to live with it until such time as a clutch is needed in the car. If it is the guide at the slave cylinder you are not doing any damage to run it, it just will be a stiff clutch.
Hope this helps you out my friend. Be well and good luck, Al

Saab Clutch

The clutch pressure plate could need adjustment or replacing. Different clutches require different pressure from your foot, has the clutch always been stiff? It just may be the nature of the clutch.

i've got self belief your SAAB has a hydraulic take carry of. if so, it appears like the gadget has sprung a leak and you have lost your hydraulic fluid. this isn't any longer annoying or extremely high priced to repair, yet you will probable would desire to have the motor vehicle towed to a fix shop to do the paintings.
