I'm talking about just in general when you're sick or starting to get sick. It feels like every bone in your body is bruised but there hasn't been any physical stress. What causes this?

Well it may be low potassium, sodium or magnesium in the blood. Could be dehydration. When you're sick, your body is using up all it's vitamins and minerals and water to fight off your illness, so that is the cause of muscle ache while you're sick. That's why it's important to drink lots of fluids and eat a lot or at least take a vitamin or two while you're sick!

Other possible causes:

Excessive exercise
Unaccustomed exertion
Muscle injury
Muscle strain
Infection - many infections cause muscle aches and pains.
Virus
Bacterial infection
Fibromyalgia - causing multiple muscle tender points.
Thyroid disease
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Depression
Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Muscle metabolism disorders
Dermatomyositis - cause multiple muscle cramps
Polymyositis - cramps in many muscles
Polymyalgia rheumatica
Diabetes - may cause muscle cramps if undiagnosed or poorly controlled
Diabetic ketoacidosis - muscle breakdown may cause muscle cramps
Circulatory disorders
Intermittent claudication - usually causing calf muscle pain
Tetanus
Certain medications

It is because the body is busy fighting off the 'invader' so less attention is left for the rest of the body. The aching is merely the extra effort needed to keep the body running.

the buildup of lactic acid in those tissues . . .

This builds up in your muscles during exercise and makes you feel sore or fatigued. Your muscles have been "stressed' and that's why they feel the way they do - like you have been beaten or bruised. Developing those muscles will build up an endurance in your body to that buildup of acid, etc.

Your body's immune system is trying to fight off the illness, and it causes pain in the muscles as well as sometimes the organs. Have you ever noticed how your skin will hurt too? And the skin is the largest organ in the body.

WHEN YOUR SICK YOUR RESTLESS. YOUR MUSCLES DONT GET THE REST THEY NEED SO THEY START TO ACHE. THAT IS YOUR BODY'S WAY OF TELLING YOU TO GET SOME REST.
