This is a common misconception. The banana is the biggest seed in the world, indeed. If you have the time, ou really should grow one. what you should do is: prick the banana around 6 times with a small fork/cocktail stick. Keep it warm (in a hot airing cupboard?) for around 3 weeks, sspended over a bowl of water. It should by now, have started to 'sprout'. If you then plant it in Irish Moss (or another fertiliser/equivalent- but NOT too alkaline) then it should grow into a banana plant. They grow rather fast- around 7 centimetres in every 24 hour period.

The bananas that we can buy do not have any seeds in them because they are genetically a triploid hybrid meaning they have three set of chromosomes therefore they are sterile. The bananas in the nature are diploid and they have large seeds in them.
This is what I learnt about them in Orchard faculty. What Herman says is interesting I wonder if you can really make a commercial banana fruit start growing roots sounds more like it would rot into a brown mess, but who knows, gotta try it once.

The wild species have fruits with numerous large, hard seeds; virtually all culinary bananas have seedless fruits. While the original bananas contained rather large seeds, triploid (and thus seedless) cultivars have been selected for human consumption. These are propagated asexually from offshoots of the plant.
Cultivated bananas are parthenocarpic, which makes them sterile and unable to produce viable seeds. Lacking seeds, another form of propagation is required.
