If you go to either the BBC website or Google and search for the winners of this year's "Ignobel Awards" (the awards for unconventional scientific research) then you'll find the cure for hiccups.
It's described as "Digital Rectal Massage" - I kid you not - and is now the official 'best cure for hiccups'.
Sounds disgusting and weird, but if you don't believe me check out the website!
Here's part of the actual story:
"Medicine: The Termination of Intractable Hiccups with Digital Rectal Massage, by Francis Fesmire, Majed Odeh, Harry Bassan and Arie Oliven."

Ok this sounds really weird, but it honestly works, and everyone who has tried it has been really surprised after laughing at the suggestion! One glass of water, one normal knife that you would use to eat with. Put the knife in the glass of water blade down, then drink the water. Don't worry it won't hurt you as your nose only touches the handle. Drink all the water and hey presto, no hiccups! Although if you've had a few drinks in a bar and ask for that because you have hiccups the bar staff do give you weird looks and sometimes refuse........!!

The best I've ever heard of was done for a friend who had hiccups for several days. No doctors gave any help. A nurse used a very small straw ( something like it, anyway) up his nose and made contact with something which stopped the hiccups. MD was never told for fear of medical profession's reaction.

My best cure for hiccups is drinking water upside down. It is tricky though.

The one that always works for me is as follows:
Slowly take in tiny breaths in succession, but don't breath out. Do as many as possible until you can't take another in. Then hold it for as long as you can then slowly let the air out.
Hiccups over!

This really works honest - a drink of vinegar/beetroot juice/pickled onion juice etc or eat a banana......
The barman in our local used to fill a glass of vinegar for those unfortunate customers (how many of you can raise your hands to having been in that situation - honestly now!) and it always worked...
