LOL - it wasn't me, but an acquaintance. He's stuck in CO for "something" and his bond was posted at 250K

Something pretty serious, but who knows. In my experience bail that high stems from something violent where there is a likelihood of reoccurance if he were to be released, or a repeat offender that has a history of not appearing for court dates. My guess is the first.

Each crime has a set bail amount depending on the county and state you live in. He may have committed more than one crime that totaled 250,000 in bail. After he is arraigned, his first day in court....a judge may raise or lower the bail as he/she sees fit.
Hope this helps.

Bond isn't punishment it's to assure your appearance in court. Generally the more serious the offense suggests you're more likely to flea, resulting in a higher bond. Another factor to consider when setting a bond is the suspects past history of appearing in court as schedule, or failure to have appeared in the past. A $250,000 bond definately indicates a fairly serious offense and the possibility that the accused has failed to appear in court in the past.

well here in California a first offender will get a 10,000 bail for burglary. What's 25 times worse?

Go to a bail bondsman, give him $25,000. Prepare to pay the rest if you skip out on bail.
