The reason a dog will eat its own or anothers poo is because there is still goodness in the waste. This is common with the cheaper brand of dog foods. Some dog foods might seem hugely expensive, but this is where they differ. The food is more digestible and therefore what comes out the other end is literally waste rather than undigested food. You can try tricks like the pineapple thing, but this is a reactive method which doesn't really address the main issue. Be proactive and look at the dogs diet.

Consumption of feces is a common but disturbing habit in dogs. While the cause is of this behaviour is unknown, A product called 'DETER' has been formulated to help stop this vice.
This is a Coprophagia Treatment.
Product facts:
1) Stops dogs & puppies from consuming their own feces.
2) Comes in an Easy to feed chewable tablets.
3) It is safe and effective
4) Independent testing has shown DETER to be 95-98% effective in stopping Coprophagia.
Also, by increasing the physical activity of your pet and feeding a high quality diet may also assist you in controlling this beahavior.
You can buy DETER from over the counter in most good pet stores, or you could consult your vet who may be able to supply you with this or a simular product.
Hope this is of some help to you.

I had a dog who done the same thing. I tried every thing even went to the vet nothing worked. I later learned that eating poo like that cuz my dog would eat it every time but. Learn it was a symptom of inbreeding. Looking back now I think my puppy may have been. Good LUCK!!!!!

If she can't get out to clean the fecal matter up before the dog gets to it, try putting meat tenderizer on her food. It tastes good to the dogs when they eat it, but it makes their fecal matter less appetizing. You could try putting chili powder on the piles as well, after a few times of trying to eat that, she should get better about it. The clinic I work for sells a product that you put into the food that makes their feces less appetizing to them as well. If you cannot get her to stop, I would speak to your vet to see if they have any other recommendations. Its not always true that they are looking for "missing nutrients". Too rich of dog food, or food with lots of indigestible fillers can leave undigested food stuff in the feces making it smell like a good snack. Dogs that have been punished for defecating in the house, or in the wrong spots sometimes eat their own feces to keep their area clean or to avoid punishment. If she's been doing this her whole life, it will be hard to break. Best of luck...

I herd about the pineapple to, but I am not sure it works. I also heard that meat tenderizer will work, but not sure about that either. There is however, a product you can get at the pet store or from your vet that you put in the dogs food. I don't know what it is called but the vet or pet store will know what you are talking about.
I do know that eating their own poop is not good for them, and they can get sick from it.
If she all of a sudden started this, there may be something wrong and I would take her to a vet and get it checked out.

Put a firework in the dogs poo poo and when he bites it he will blow his teeth out meaning he will not be able to eat the poo unless he has a straw. You ever seen a dog use a straw? No i didnt think so-problem solved. Man i'm good.

The pineapple theory does work and it works a treat, give a ring of pineapple every week when the dog is doing this, I breed show quality dogs and all of them have the same problem every now and again this is how I found out and over the years this has worked for over 25 dogs and puppies in my care

Put some red pepper in it to make it taste bad--yes I did say make it taste bad. Some breeds have a direct genetic link to wolves whose behavior did include eating "poo" to avoid starvation.
