to do this safely get a ear cleaner from he vets office. they are cheap and usually can be bought over the counter with out a consultation from the vet.
the directions of use are on the bottle. squeeze a small amount into the ear and gently massage - this loosens the wax for removal and most cats like the feeling. do not poke anything into the canal as this could cause irreversible damage. use a small ball of cotton wool and scope into the ear removing just the outer wax you can see. the cat may flick or shake its head to don't do this in a nice room!!!!!
DO NOT USE - HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (dangerous) / VINEGAR / ALCOHOL. theres no need to with safe specific cleaners on the market to buy.
MALASEB as mentioned above is a medicated shampoo/flush etc used for skin issues such as dermatitis. it shouldn't be used anywhere near eyes or mucus membranes (gums). only use if directed by a vet!
if the wax is dark in appearance and smelly get him checked in case ear mites are he prob this will need prescribed ear drops to sort the prob not a cleaner.

You should remember that your cats ears are like your own and nothing should be put into the ear canal. By using a Q-tip or some other object inside the ear it can actually push back ear wax and compact it, making it hard for your cat to hear, or you can damage its eardrum. Ear wax coming out of your ear is our bodies natural way of cleaning itself. Simply take a cotton ball dipped in Alcohol and swab out the outer parts of the ear regularly. If you notice anything strange coming out of the ear besides wax such as blood or different fluid take her to a vet.

My vet told me to use a mixture of vinegar & water(1/2 &1/2)
Pour a small amount into the ear & massage at the base of the ear. This will loosen up any dibris. Watch for the splatter when the cat shakes her head! Then wipe the ear out with a cotton ball.
Cats usually don't have excessive ear wax. You may want to take her to the vet to check for infection or earmites.
Oh yeah, DO NOT USE ALCOHOL!

First off, NEVER use a Q-tip which is what my vet told me. I have the same problem with one of my kittens. I was instructed to use cotton balls as they don't have a hard stick attached to them, giving you less of a chance to jab at something by accident that could be damaging. Grab a couple of them, wet them a bit and very gently wipe the earwax out. Remember that their ears are just as delicate as humans when you clean them. Another suggestion the vet gave me was to add a drop or 2 of baby oil in my kitty's ear and it will help bring the wax out of the ear, making it easier to wipe clean.
Good luck! =)

Theres this stuff called Malaseb and your vet could probably give you some. Its an ear flush and help to clean out the wax and also will kill any ear mites. My cat was cleaning his ears and it turned out he had ear mites, so bring your cat to the vet.

Wrap a soft cloth or a couple layers of tissue around your index finger. Wipe the wax out of her ear. Don't go to deep, don't use too much pressure. Give her a treat afterward. You need to make it pleasant for her so she'll allow you to keep cleaning her ears.

You can clean your cats ears with a q-tip and some alcohol. Keep in mind that you need to be careful in your cats ears just as you would in a childs ears.

please dont use a q-tip. a BALL OF COTTON. and if its too big for your cats ear, tear it apart. thats how they're cleaned in groom shops, and probably the same thing they do at vet clinic. NEVER a q-tip. i always soak the cotton ball in alcohol and squeeze it out real good too. my dogs, my cats, my customers, and my kids! lol.
