I totally think it has degenerated. I used to work at McDonalds many moons ago & when I worked there it was required you had to say thank you to the customers. Now, I go thru drive thru at the same one I worked at back then & they NEVER say thank you or come back or anything. They just hand out the bag & close the window saying nothing. It irritates the heck out of me. It's not just there it's everywhere. People don't hold the doors for people anymore. They don't think about other peoples feelings at all. They will run over top of you in a store & never even turn to look at you let alone say I'm sorry. I think it has worsened a great deal. It's something that needs to be stopped somehow. I try my best to teach my kids to be better than that. I hope it sticks. Great question~

customer service over the phone has degenerated to such a point that I hate having to call anyone about anything. First you go through pressing all the right keys to get somewhere or speaking to a machine that can't understand you, then if you finally get someone live on the other end, half the time you either can't understand them or they have an attitude problem. I have worked in the telecommunications field for a long time and they used to give people spelling tests, etc to make sure they were qualified.. now they slap anyone behind a phone and call them a Customer Service Rep !!!

Not a chance. I think most customer service jobs are underpaid, but this also often leads to an employee staying on the job just for the paycheck, not because they have a burning desire to help anyone. Therefore, unless the employer insists on good quality service for their patrons - it ain't gonna happen. Occasionally, I'm completely wrong about this, i.e. Nordstrom's. When I buy clothes there, not only do I receive outstanding service in the store, but a short thank you note appears in the mail a few days later from the sales person who helped me. Obviously this is totally unnecessary, but what a lovely touch - and it certainly encourages me to come back and shop again.

No, customer service is shockingly lacking--especially in retail. Here's an example. I was in Blockbuster Movies to rent a dvd recently and the cashier tried to agressively sell me on Blockbuster's new online service. He wasn't nice about it. I asked him why he or the company would push such a thing? That marketing ploy eliminates the cashier's job! I understand it is to compete with other online services such as Netflix and video-on-demand on your cable--and I could have done either of those. Instead, I wanted to get my butt up off the couch, get out of the house, and --by God--INTERACT with another human being! Just because a thing is more convenient doesn't necessarily make it more desirable.

I also agree that service via phone is atrocious. The worst invention ever is the interactive response automated phone answering systems. My bank's is especially bad.

I think he level of customer service has greatly decreased over the years. I mean, I got to stores today, and the employees don't even say 'hello'! The first thing I do to people like that is say 'hello, how are you? how are things going?' and force them to communicate with me! lol I know, I'm evil! But I can't believe employees act this way! I don't know if people are just too lazy or if they think customers don't want to be bothered with small talk.

The decline in service has more to do with the increase in the number of people requiring service. What we see are businesses expecting their employees to serve more and more people instead of hiring more employees. They stretch them to the limit and callousness and poor service are the end result. Also people that provide customer service are generally not paid well and it results in high turnover. This means that the people providing customer service generally do not have much experience.

This question always depends on where you are. The service at finest hotels and restaurants is still quite good. Overall I would say the general customer service is at an all time low.

Degenerated badly. I am originally from the midwest and my Texan husband was shocked at how friendly people are in my home state. I try to be polite anyway, who knows what kind of rudeness the clerk has had to put up with in her/his day.

I think the level of service has gone down hill! It is horrible how some people can't be bothered to do their job. My motto is that you should make the best of what you have!
