He and his friend went to dinner, and got sick at the same time. The friend went to the hospital and they told him it was a contagious form of food poisoning.

They were right, because I got sick too. I've never heard of this. Have you? What kind of bacteria would that be? Any information is appreciated.

Viral gastroenteritis tends to be most common in winter. We're seeing a lot of it in the community right now, and most of the food poisoning complaints we get turn out to be viral gastroenteritis that's NOT caused by the food.

The virus in question is norovirus. It is EXTREMELY contagious, but the sickness is short. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and NO FEVERS.

Norovirus can get into food and be spread that way, but usually, it's spread via person to person contact.

I wrote a pretty good primer on norovirus in the Best Answer a while back. Check it out, and add notes if you have more questions. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aj0uiEtpYNlsH1slWnn3HlXsy6IX?qid=1006040916466

Food poisoning is not contagious. It cannot be passed from one person to another, unless maybe they are french kissing and pass the contaminated substance somehow through their saliva. I doubt this was the case, of course.

More likely, is was just a virus or bacteria that commonly causes intestinal problems that was passed among all of you. Not because of food poisoning.

never heard of contagious food poisoning before! but since you mention it, i got curious and made some research about it.

You might read further here: http://www.drgreene.com/21_1094.html as they are saying that some food poisoning can be contagious... yes, through Fecal–Oral Transmission. But it is better if you read further this other document here http://www.drgreene.com/21_1088.html, because I am dubious how you might have got the food poisoning from your boyfriend when Fecal–Oral Transmission means: Fecal–oral transmission occurs when bacteria or viruses found in the stool of one child (or animal) are swallowed by another child. This is especially common in group-daycare settings, where fecal organisms are commonly found on surfaces and on the hands of providers. Usually, the contamination is invisible.

Food poisoning is just horrible. That is the absolute worst.
E-coli is contagious and this is the bacteria that may have been in the food.
Hope everyone is okay.

Bacterial infection which antibiotics will not help.
The infection was probably in his mouth, and you probably kissed him and he passed it on to you. Nothing you really can do except wait till your body fights off the infection.
