I don't want to dry my hair out, but I'm thinking if I limiit my flat iron use to just once a week and make sure to deep condition once a week, will it really cause that much damage? My hair gets straight when I blow dry it, but the flat iron makes it very very silky...

Be careful -- it partly depends on how you're flat ironing it. If you go REALLY slowly and really get it completely straight, even once a week will eventually fry it. If you just run the iron through her hair without pressing down to hard or for too long, you should be fine. Definitely stop using it if in a few weeks you start noticing dullness in your hair. I used to flat iron my hair -- I deep conditioned once a week, used very expensive protective products, and had a ceramic chi to minimize damage, but after about a year and a half, I had to crop my hair really short because it was ruined beyond repair (I'm a brunette, but the bottom part of my hair that I flat ironed started to lighten and looked a bit red. It was actually kind of pretty, but felt like straw...) My advice: save it for the special occasions, and invest in some high quality leave-in conditioners and/or straighteners, and buy a good boar-hair or ceramic brush to straighten while you blow dry. Sephora and Aveda both make nice ones. L'Oreal has some in-expensive but effective leave-in straighteners you might want to try.

Most importantly to prevent damage when using a flat iron on a regular basis, make sure your hair is completely dry before you start. If you can blow dry at night and then use the flat iron in the morning, that would be ideal. Also, make sure it's a ceramic iron (I love the CHI), use a protective spray made for use w/ a straight iron, wash it as little as possible, and use a good deep conditioner once a week. I don't think it will damage it if you limit it to once or twice a week, especially if you don't color your hair.

Your hair should be OK. Just make sure you get trims every 5-6 weeks. I do the same thing. I flat iron my hair once a week and deep condition it. Make sure you have or get a real ceramic flat iron and also use a good straighting product that help your hair when you use heated appliances.

If you take care of your hair and have a professional ceramic plated flat iron, it wont dry your hair at all. Use a deep conditone or hair masque on your hair at least once a week. and try not to wash and flat iron every single day. But don't bleach or highlight your hair because it will probably break off after a few days of the heat.

i have always had wavey bushy frizzy hair, but since i bought a flat iron it has made my hair straight silky and smooth. and even after i wash it it slowly became silky on its own. i've used it for about 4 years now maybe once a week or sometimes twice and my hair is always beautiful now. i don't think it'll damage her hair as long as its not the cheap kind. makes sure its ceramic and tourmaline. i believe that those actually repair your hair.
on the other hand, the blow dryer can really mess it up, although it does make my hair straight, it doesn't make make hair feel as well as when using the flat iron.

also, don't forget to you a product for protecting your hair when using the flat iron. i buy mine at sally beauty supply.

this is fine for your hair but try not using a blow dryer too this will damage hair good for you using a deep conditioner every week this will do wonders i also advise you to use mayonnaise once every fortnight just coat every section of hair in real mayonnaise put a shower cap over the top and leave on for half an hour and then wash off using garnier repair and and shine shampoo and conditioner your tresses will love! Keep deep conditioning, apply mayo, use this great repairing shampoo which contains lipids (great for adding moisture to dry hair), apply a protection spray before heat appliances and your hair will be shiny glowing and healthy in no time good luck xxx

Not at all!! Go ahead and use it even 3x a week and it won't damage your hairr, specially since you will deep condition it and there are other treatments too. You also have to make sure you have a ceramic flatnner, like for example the CHI, it woun't damamge your hair as much as the regular kind.

Flat ironing and blow drying is hazardous for any hair however it must be pleasant so long as you employ hair protector spray and if you're developing your hair lessen on heated gear. Hope this helped :)

I flat iron my hair more than once a week, and it seems to do fine. One thing that you can use to help is a cream, you can buy it at a local drug store or something, just find one that helps striation and protects your hair.
