I agree that if you are moving to a country in which a different language is spoken one must learn the language.
I think the English language, for most Hispanics, is not a very hard language to learn compared to many other Nationalities or ethnicities. (Asians, Some African and some Eastern European)
Spanish is widely spoken in the US because of heritage and an unspoken pride that quietly tries to go against the system. English is only used among Hispanics when it is necessary.

I thought this was a free country. We can speak any language we want. In Mexico there are places that the people speak English. Why do some of you white people think this is your land? It's not. Originally you guys are from England, Germany, etc. There are too many raciest...maybe they should return to their homeland. There are a lot of Mexicans/Hispanics that are going to school to learn English. Just because you heard a couple of them speaking Spanish does not mean that they don't know or that they're not learning. People like you are very ignorant....sorry, very STUPID!!!

First, to Rock, I'm Cherokee and speak Cherokee. Just thought that might be of interest as you mentioned our language ;) Sgi dv!(thanks so much!)
Back on topic, my guess is that because English and Spanish are from two different families. They aren't related languages, English being Germanic and Spanish being a Romance language. Generally speaking, it's much easier for an English speaker to learn Spanish than it is for a Spanish speaker to learn English. One important reason for this is that English doesn't use a phonetic writing system, whereas Spanish does. It and Italian are both extremely easy for English speakers.
I hope that helps.

I was born in the U.S. and am not of Hispanic heritage. English is my first language. Just because you hear someone speaking Spanish (or any other language) in public, doesn't mean that they don't speak English. English is a difficult language to learn. It's very difficult to learn another language with native fluency after puberty. Remember the proverb, "don't judge someone until you've walked a mile in his shoes".
Having said that, I also know that there are a lot of people here, not just those from hispanic cultures, who come to the U.S. and yet don't make the effort to learn to communicate in English. I just don't get those people.
No, I don't think it should be made mandatory. But I also believe in the principle, "If you don't work, you don't eat".

Ignoring your racists rants, but when states cater to the hispanic language like signage, providing translators etc, instead of education you will always have this problem. Plus some people find it difficult to learn a new language. I have been trying to learn Italian for some time and I am just not good at it.

My Husband is Mexican. He can speak English very well. Most Mexicans can speak enough English to get them by. I think as they know the basics its cool. But English is a very hard language to learn. I think some Mexicans try but just don't get it. I'm not taking up for them, but you have to realize that just because we live in America doesn't mean that we are all white/black and speak the same language. Up around Chicago there is nothing but Spanish (By the way Mexican is not a language)...America is full of alot of different races. So much so that you can't even say we have a "culture"..Because we don't. But as long as they have a basic knowledge of English here....just leave them be. If we were in Mexico and we were at the supermarket speaking among ourselves....we would speak in English. My Hispanic family speaks in English when necessary. That's enough to me

Easy Klan members. I am an American with Mexican heritage and from the sound of it most of you answering are just terrified rednecks. Don't worry you can still have your trailer park and Wal-Mart, no one is going to take them away from you. I can speak both languages very fluently and I am very proud of where I came from. I was born here in America, I defended my country by serving in the Navy and if I want to speak martian language I'm free to do so. But if it is that important to you that it be made mandatory to learn English in this country than I am going to demand that it be mandatory that everyone learn to pronounce every word from Spanish decent correctly. In case you haven't noticed most of the southern states from California to Florida are all Spanish. So next time you speak thier names, or their city's names or their streets, or even their citizens names, pronouce them correctly. Unless you're too stupid to learn how. Maybe if you tried to get to know some of the people that you hate so much (obviously because of the color of their skin) you could teach them yourselves how to read and write English. Maybe you can even learn a different language yourselves. As far as people being stupid for not learning another language, there are far more stupid people who are intolerant of things in this country only because they don't understand it. I feel sorry for you. I bet most of you don't get so offended with a white French Canadian when they come to visit America and they decide to speak their language.

Does it bother you that you can't understand their conversation? If they wanted to talk to you, they would probably use English, but if they want to talk to each other they will use something easier for them. I'm sure their children speak English pretty well to, All 1st generation immigrants tend to use their native language, 2nd gen. use both and 3rd on tend to use the language of the country they are in. I'm Hispanic, I speak both English and Spanish just fine and am actually working on German.

They aren't learning English because our politicians, most likely in an effort to gain votes, have made it too easy to get along just fine in this country without having to speak English. No one is stopping them from crossing the border, no one is standing up to them when they demand that classes in AMERICAN schools be taught in Spanish. It's all a little too crazy for me.
I agree with you that English should be mandatory, but only if you plan on becoming a resident of the country. If you're just visiting for a week or two, get a "Your Language to English" dictionary and hold on tight.

Very, very true. Everyone who comes to the United States must speak, or learn to speak English. Same goes to other nations: When going to Mexico, speak Spanish. When going to Germany, speak German. When going to France, speak French. I can't tell if it is either stubborness or heritage, because most Latinos don't speak English. If they choose to refuse to speak English, then they will be more lost than they might originally were and have few to zero public and business relations. Everyone must speak English!
