Yes, someone can. And demons can attack without possessing as well--very often even if the a person did not intend to invite one into his/her life, they can enter through an action (i.e. Someone may not have INTENDED to invite a demon into their home, but using a ouiji board can accomplish this with or without their intentions.)
What you are describing about being woken up and feeling like someone is sitting on your chest is CLASSIC--seriously. And terrifying, I'm sure. Are you praying? The best prayer for times like this is to invoke the intercession of St. Michael--here is his prayer:
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
St. Michael is a very powerful protector because he is an angel like demons (fallen angels) and thus, he has the same power as them (or more depending on low the demon is on the "scale" of power).
It's good to have your house blessed, and to have blessed/holy things in your home like Holy Water, blessed rosary, blessed Saints' medallions...in the true story for which the movie "The Exorcist" was based, I understand that the priests seemed to be "losing" the battle against the demons attacking the boy they were trying to help, but it turned around when they placed a blessed statue of St. Michael the Archangel in the room (see? St. Michael strikes again:) ). Get rid of anything which would make a welcoming environment for a demon--skull candles, pentagrams, you get the idea, right?
If you are Catholic, go to confession and recieve the Eucharist. Demons hate this--it makes your body an undesireable place for a demon to be in.
Regardless of your religious background, a Catholic priest can still help you (I see this time and time again in episodes of "A Haunting" on the Discovery Channel). They are there to help all Christians, not just Catholic. But you do want to be sure you are talking with an orthodox priest--the best measure of this is to find out if he believes the doctrines of the Church. Of course, if you ask any priest this, he will say yes so you have to ask something different. Try something controversial like contraception--if the priest tries to say something like "contraception isn't ideal, but...." and make excuses for when it would okay to use or something, this is NOT an orthodox priest--don't even tell him about what you are experiencing--he will not help you and he may mock you. Even if you have to call several churches to find an orthodox priest, it is worth it. And this priest can bless you and your home.
Finally, I am not a spiritual director for you and I don't know the particulars of your experience, but I do know of someone to whom a demon was introduced into their home (via a ouiji board at their daughter's birthday party). It was a black dog with red eyes which only attacked this woman's husband (an atheist) and her children--apparanetly to try to scare her out of doing something that was good. Is this experience for you scaring you out of doing something which you feel God wants you to do? For this woman, when she realized that the demon wanted to scare out doing this good thing, she did it anyway and, with the addition of blessing her home and keeping blessed things there, the demon went away. On a lighter note, her atheistic husband now believes in God--I bet the demon didn't mean to do that:)
I hope that helps. I will definately definately keep you in my prayers. If you ever EVER feel like you are out of control of what you say/do or find yourself fantasizing about hurting people, make sure you talk about that with the orthodox priest you find. Please don't put this off---you can potentially put not only yourself at risk, but also your family and friends and anyone that comes to visit.
Please do repost sometime and let me know how you are doing. God bless!!!!!

Wow. The same types of things have happened to me - i thought i was the only one. I'd say leave the book alone. There are some things you mess around with and some things you don't. Evil spirits have all types of ways for getting at and to us so perhaps that's one.
Try calling Jesus' name whenever something like that happens . Sometimes when i try i can feel something - maybe hands - holding me down completely and covering my mouth so i cant call on him. Then when i think it (his name) and try to calm down and not think about the fact that i cant breath (it makes you panic) "it" goes away.

I've had all sorts of things happen to me in the dead of the night when i'm the only soul awake that i can't explain and scares the hell out of me. Just keep in mind that no demon in hell can even stand the SOUND of Jesus' name and that he is the only way to overcome such situations.

God Bless you and i mean it. Stay safe honey

demons are greater or less what are prevalent as ifreet (that are made out of smokeless fire- for this reason their fiery nature. those are parallel creations of God prevalent as Jinns who stay interior the comparable earth different than our perception is constrained and cant elect maximum them. they have unfastened will. people who're rebels from God are noted as the Shayateens because of the fact they are the progeny of devil (the 1st riot). they procreate significantly better than people. Now those jinns comprehend magic. it is not possession in its literal experience. One jinn can placed a spell on yet another jinn purely like people do. Say a love spell. the different jinn (demon) is a completely controlled agent. yet those already in hell are purely rebellious and comprehend no peace. all is havoc and fire (center earth).

This happened to my friend before. She didn't stop doing whatever she was doing to make this come on her she looked totally different after years went by doing whatever she was doing. She came clean with me told me that she had to go to a deliverance minister to get rid of the demon's that had attached to her spirit. She told me she was naming demons to the minister that she had no clue that she knew about. I seen her being really nice then all of a sudden be SO evil. I prayed for her. She continued to harass the Pastor and one of the Pastor's wife. She just got out of hand at church a month ago with the Pastor and Pastor's wife. The authorities had to be called. Then after that authorities had to be at church to protect the Pastor so forth. She didn't return to church. When this happened I had to leave it in god's hands. I talked to a Pastor at our church. I was told to move forward. The Pastor also told me she needed to depend on God. Other wards get away from her. Stay away from her until she was delivered from whatever evil door she had opened up. The Pastor did tell me she had to have opened up an evil door to let these evil spirit's attach to her spirit. We are all spirit beings. This means that we all have a spirit within us. I stay away from reading or watching movies concerning about people being possed by Satan. I know for a fact Satan can work through people.

you are possessed...............by illogical thinking.

someone mentioned the exorcist being a true story. it is true there was a young girl who had severe psychological problems. so intense was her trauma that she affected a kind of mass hysteria in several people around her. no wonder she had psych problems with this sort of people around her. poor girl. "but i SAW the bed shaking and literally lift off the ground. her head spun around, the demon was in her."

give-me-a-break. put the book down. talk to a councelor about your anxiety problem. it is possible to actually drive yourself crazy.

EDIT > you can structure your thought, make yourself believe in any silly illogical thing. my suggestion is start living in the real world, this is not the fourteenth century. surely you have at least a sixth grade education. sounds like some of these people do not.

I live by the belief that "all" is for me! If you can believe that one God created the entire universe with ALL that is in it, then how can you believe the devil is not also 'God's plan'? You mean to tell me that an all knowing God makes things that he himself dodn't know who they be or will be? If you are afraid of a dog it attacks you, why? Because it becomes nervous and scared of you. The same goes for spiritual entities. Don't be afraid of them then they will leave you be.

Yes you can but, those who call upon the name of the Lord will be delivered from the power of the devil.

Mat 8:28 And when He had come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, two demon-possessed ones met Him, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one might pass by that way.
Mat 8:29 And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with You, Jesus, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?

Mat 15:22 And behold, a woman of Canaan coming out of these borders cried to Him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is grievously vexed with a demon.

Mat 17:18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and he departed out of him. And the child was cured from that very hour.

Mar 7:26 The woman was a Greek, a Syro-phoenician by race. And she begged Him that He would cast the demon out of her daughter.

Luk 4:33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon and cried out with a loud voice,
Luk 4:34 saying, Let us alone! What is to us and to You, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know You, who You are, the Holy One of God.
Luk 4:35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be quiet and come out of him! And when the demon had thrown him into the midst, he came out of him, not harming him.

This will be the end to all evil in the Day of the Lord.

2Th 1:5 For this is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God for which you also suffer,
2Th 1:6 since it is a righteous thing with God to repay tribulation to those who trouble you,
2Th 1:7 and to give rest with us to you who are troubled, at the revealing of the Lord Jesus from Heaven with the angels of His power,
2Th 1:8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,
2Th 1:9 who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
2Th 1:10 when He shall come to be glorified in His saints and to be admired in all those who believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that Day.

Well saved people cannot be possessed, but the lost can. Satan cannot possess something that belongs to God. If you can get possessed and your saved then your not saved. Not saying you but in general.
