If you are spanning 48 feet, then you don't need joists. They don't come that long. In fact, at 48 feet, you will need mini-trusses.

You need to cut the span with some interior columns. You can get 16' - 24' manufactured joists.

The ceiling is usuall supported by the roof trusses, which can span 48'.

If the insulation has a vapor barrier it should be facing toward the heated area which would be facing towards the upstairs. If there is no barrier there is nothing to worry about. Is it possible for you to leave the insulation and nail up some luan underlayment? This comes in 4 x 8 x 1/4 inch thick and might be a good choice. Then you could paint it. I've used it in some storage buildings and turned out okay. The luan is about 10.00 dollars a sheet or you could nail up some drywall. Regards, Dale

I'm not sure about what kind of lumber, but a floor should always be on at least 16 inch centers (i.e. floor joists should be no more than 16 inches apart) - 14 is better but more expensive.

RTFM...read the f'ing manual, or in this case, the book.

There are residential and industrial building codes and standards for this type of thing. Few know them, but they are SURELY published in your textbook along with equations and examples for using them.

If I give you the answer now, how will you do your job in the future?
