I have flown with them on numerous ocassions and they aren't the best out there nor are they the worst. Would I fly with them again, probably not. What I do like about them is that they are very strict on the carry on luggage and size, so when you sit in the back, like I do, at least you know that you have a chance at some overhead bin space.
I am assuming that by SA, you mean South Africa. If that's the case, I would fly Lufthansa. They are definitley a better airline then AF.
Good luck.

Air France personnel... kinda treats the foreigners different than they treat the french. I would advice KLM, because now they have made the KLM - Air France group and the fares are pretty much the same.
And stay away from British Airways cause there the flight attendants are really really offering a bad service.

They have good food, reasonable aircraft and very variable staff, from the charming to the downright obnoxious.
The biggest problem with Air France that I find is that their main hub, Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle, can be very inefficient and difficult to navigate.
Assuming you have unlimited access to France or the Schengen zone, if you have to change 'halls' (e.g. 2F to 2C) at CDG, it is almost always quicker to exit the airport, walk to the correct hall, and enter again. The airside transit buses are horrendously slow, crowded and inefficient.
Otherwise, they're fine. They have an online check-in function on their website too, which is worthwhile to ensure you have a decent seat for that long haul!

In my own point of view AF is a bit expensive for what they offer, sometimes late.. But still ok, there's many worst companies.
I'd prefer LuftHansa if you have to go to SA, otherwise my favorites are Singapore and Thai airways
regards, from France

I have flown short haul with them several times. They are excellent except for the fact that they tend to strike at least once a year and they are not the best for arriving on time.
